JD 4310 ignition problem? is it the battery, the starter, the starter solenoid or what?

I had the tractor in for repair and they said it needed a new battery. The dealer installed the battery and dropped off the tractor and I tried to start it 4 days later, it wouldn't start. I removed the new battery, charged it, then reinstall the battery and the tractor started. I ran it all day, brought it home and put her to bed.Three days later the same thing, disconnect the battery, charged it and the tractor started.

When I went to restart it after the 3 days the starter click, I turned the key off and the starter continued to click several times.

Sounds like something is draining the battery. I would verify that with a multimeter using the current draw feature. Take the negative lead off the battery and use a hose clamp to hold one lead of the meter to the battery post. Then clamp the other lead of the meter to the negative battery wire.

Most meters will carry up to 10 amps. Read the amp draw with key off. It should be close to 0. If it is reading amps, you can unplug things till you discover what is creating the draw.

The directions with the meter will tell you how to set it up if you have never done that.

You can also test with an incadesent test light connected between a terminal and battery post. If it has enough draw to light a 12v incandescent bulb it will kill the battery. Start pulling fuses until the light goes out to narrow down the draw. One of the items on that fuse will be causing the draw.

...... It might be noted to NOT try to crank the engine while the meter is connected this way. You'll quickly melt the meter probe wires......

True! Thankfully most meters are fused in this configuration but don't want to test it. Maybe I should have said key off and in your pocket.
