JD 4400 bearing made in Russia.

Though it's really not germane to this discussion, some of the best machine tool acessories come from Poland and the Czech Republic. Bison and Skoda, well I prefer them over their American counterparts any time.

A Russian made bearing, if it is made to the manufacturers specification is as good as the domestic counterpart. I don't consider Timken a premier bearing manufacturer. SKF is. SKF and FAG are world class.

I would never use MTBF numbers as a hard fast gospel guide for how long any given part will last. MTBF is calculated statistically based on running predetermined test samples of the part for maybe .5% or 1% of the desired time and looking at failures. Then the math takes over. A full 100,000 hr MTBF translates to running the part for almost 4200 days 24 hrs per day. That's about 11 years!!! This is why it is done the way it is.

As an example (my numbers here are not realistic but are used only to give an idea of how this is done):

Take 20 parts and run them at 150% of rated specs for .5% of the desired MTBF. Determine failure rate and recalculate MTBF. If the MTBF is not at the desired level there are several methods used get to that level, one being add more units to the test (usually what is done) or run longer.

As you can see this is whole process is based at statistics and probability (which is way beyond my educational skills!!). /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Last month I was visiting my parents while on vacation. While mowing one day, my dad had a front axle break on his JD 4500. When I removed the wheel for the repair I noticed his wheel bearings were both rough feeling when rotated. These are lifetime sealed and no other way to check them except for "how they feel". This tractor has 700 hours on it and I wouldn't think wheel bearings would be gone so soon. I don't know where they were made. Oh, the axle breaking wasn't caused from "bad bearings", it just broke. Maybe defective? Tractor is not abused.

For a MTBF of 100,000 miles, then an injection pump could be run for about seventy 24 hr days at 60 mph. Odd to think about a part that went for about $800 in the mid-eighties dying in a little over two months of testing. Sort of puts the lie to that Ford "Quality is Job One" thing. The Stanadyne engineer I talked to was apologetic. Upon hearing that mine lasted for 120,000 miles, his response was, "You're lucky."

I didn't think so having experienced the first loss of power on the Delaware Memorial bridge. I was lucky that I was able to nurse the truck into an International dealer in MD. The local Ford dealer wouldn't touch the truck after they found out I'd installed a turbo. The second injection pump lasted about 80,000 miles.

I'd love to see the specs the auto manufacturers use for their buyouts. I bet there are some real eye openers.

I got you bet!

The new wheel for my tedder said made in russia, just like what you found.
But I had to have it since it was a strange size and the old one had litteraly come apart.

Here is the intersting part: Guess what the old one said?

"Made in USSR" /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Got my money out of that one. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

In my defense I will say that this is an old piece of junk tedder I picked up used. At the time I had no idea that it use to be a communist tedder! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Bearings. This is a field that China is dominating the whole world industry. Most of bearings today in the world are being made in China. Even worldwide famous bearing companies are manufacturing many of their bearings in China without stamping on their bearings "Made in China." China bearings have invaded the world. They are everywhere from top quality implements to poor quality items. I guess that Russia bearing too is a China bearing.
