John Deere 4400 HST 4x4 sold John Deere 5055E 4x4 w.loader
I've had the tractor at the dealership for over a month while they tried to diagnose the problem but it remains. The motor seems to have good power but in all 3 gear ranges it feels like it is bogging down. There are no grinding noises or signs of heat. I thought about the transmission suction screen clogged but they said that didn't affect it. The hydraulics seem to work well FEL, rear lift and steering. The bill is getting bigger but no fix. Has anyone had a similar problem or any insight to the problem. The tractor has about 1700 hours on it.

Check to see if the brakes are dragging.

I'm going from memory here since it's been several years since we owned a 4400, so bear with me. On these tractors there is a shaft that goes into the transmission housing that actuates the brakes. I can't recall if it goes all the way through or there is one on each side, but it you get up under the tractor you will see what I mean. Best I can remember it is just a steel on steel pivot and it can eventually get rust in there and not let the brakes release. We had to take ours apart once and clean up the shaft(s) and lubricate them a little with some grease, anti-seize or whatever. Hope this helps.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
What he said, it was a common problem on the 4x00 and 4x10 series. The little return springs also often broke.

Pretty shocked the dealer (or is it stealer in this case?) didn't go right to the brake issue!

Do check, that's should be it.

Thanks guys for the quick replies. I contacted the dealer and suggested they look at the brakes more closely. In their defense they deal mostly in large excavators but have done other work well for me. The tractor set out for a time before our building was finished...so lesson learned to keep it dry. JP

No, not keep dry...just keep moving parts lubricated, Fluid Film works great for things like this. I can post a pic from JDP later if that will help. There is a shaft and a spring on each side.

A pic would help because this is going to be an ongoing issue. The forward and reverse pedals are tight as well. I live close to the coast so salt air probably has something to do with it also. JP

As promised:

Here is the pedal assembly, #18 are the return springs that often break:

If your brakes are hanging up as noted, your hydro pedals will be stiff because the brakes are keeping the machine form rolling while the pedals are trying to open the valves either way to allow the fluid to move, which it can't while the brakes are still applied.
