If you're thinking about the 4400, why don't you do like I did when I bought my 4300 about 6 hrs away. I called a jd dealer in that area and had them drive out and check over the tractor toe see what shape it was in. If I remember, it cost me a little over 100 bucks for that sevece call. The sent me a report and picture. I also called the dealer that the tractor was puchased at and checked on thier records on the tractor. Just a thought.

That early model JD4400 had a slew of upgrades/fixes/patches and therefore, I would recommend that you do as jfakerj sugested and have a JD dealer check it over--and at that time, have them check to see which upgrades had been done and which ones, if any, needed yet to be done. These fixes involved loader joystick linkages, 4wd linkage, brakes, fogging dash glass, battery leakage, etc. I had an early model 4400 and it had several upgrades (called a PIP by JD). IMHO, the price seems high for that many hours, but I cannot go to Edmunds or Blue Book on the Internet and find its resale value. Good luck in your choice. Mike S.

Thanks for your help. Do you think I would be miss the extra ponies of the 4400 if I went with a 4300?

JMS77, I guess I overlooked or missed this message a few days ago. First I've heard about a B2710 overheating in dusty conditions. Who do you know who's had that problem. Mine has never "overheated" and extremely "dusty" conditions have never affected the temperature enough to pay any attention to it. It is true that mowing with the brush hog in weeds and grass tall enough to get dust, seeds, etc. on the front end of the tractor can slow the air flow and cause the temperature gauge to rise. I've had to stop as often as every two hours to clear such stuff off the grill and screen when the temperature gauge has gotten to the half way mark.

I wouldn't think there was a huge/noticeable difference in power between the 4300 and 4400.

You should be able to get a comparable 4400 new, loader, sync reverse trans for about $18,500. Probably could get a new 4300, sync trans and loader for around $17,000-$17500.

How much power and size do you need? If you're thinking a 4300 might not be enough over a 4400, than a 2710 would be even more questionable.

I would guess a 2710 would fit the bill for your stated purposes. I'd probably start thinking about the JD with another $1000 off the price.

What specs are you looking for on the tractor? Power range, size, trans?

Thanks for responding. Last week two 2710's were auctioned off from a local rental company. I talked to the owner of the rental company and he told me that in dusty conditions, his cutomers would complain about the units overheating and stopping. I assume it was due to the way they ran the units, and thats probably a good reason to never buy a rental. The owner actually told me to avoid them because of this problem. I assume that the real reason was that they were worn out. Still they went for over 10k.
