Yes to Zeb's thought.. the steering wheel in relation to the position of the front wheels is always changing. And at against the stops in both right and left, the steering wheel will continue, albeit slowly, to move.

Well there you go, zebrafive & beenthere. As I said, I just thought that it was an unusual idiosyncrasy (the steering wheel never 'centring' in the same spot).

So, are we advising the OP that he doesn't have a problem?

Yes, no problem unless there is excessive turning.. which I've not experienced as "normal" operation.

Agreed not a problem. Most people do not notice the steering wheel slightly changes position unless the have a knob mounted on the wheel that gives them a reference point.

Thanks for all of the replies!

I've never experienced anything like this before, so the confirmation of 'normal' is appreciated. I didn't understand the difference between hydraulic and hydrostatic steering assist.

I still think that what I am experiencing is a bit excessive. When I say a different position, I mean as much as 180 degrees different.

Cheers!

A failure in the steering would be the speed of the turning, not the position degrees, I believe. If the speed is slow, no problem. If fast, then likely a problem.

There is no mechanical connect between the steering wheel and the front wheels.

Hope this eases your mind.

When I mow, the suicide knob (grew up calling it a necker' knob) continually changes position but not noticeably fast.

beenthere,

Thank you. Yes. It does to some degree. I think that's a steering wheel joke.

I'll pay attention to how far and how fast I crank the wheel, and see where that gets me.

Both my 300 series and my Kioti do the same thing. It's normal. In my case it seems like I can turn the steering wheel faster than the front wheels are turning.

Putting 3 knobs on the wheel will ensure that you always have a knob where you would like.
