Hey everyone.. I have been looking quite a bit and am in desperate need of a thumb for my JD 3320 with 448 backhoe.. has anyone found a bolt-on one that fits or a weld-on one? any help, pictures, or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I put one one my model 48 backhoe, but this was a custom-built hydraulic thing. I think you're looking for something that's more off-the-shelf and a little bit faster than this.

Thank you for the response.. I was looking for a bolt-on solution.. but to gain the versatility a thumb provides I am open to any solution at this point. very helpful. thank you.

So my recommendation would be to start out with a fixed thumb that shares the pivot with the bucket, if at all possible. Then later you can add the hydraulics. Having the hydraulic thumb is such a huge improvement. You can bring it out and just go pick stuff up, then tuck it away when it’s not needed. But, it’s a bit of work to get that all worked out, and I couldn’t find any other alternative and the build it. I had considered the fixed weld on or bolt on ones.

The Thumb I added to my forks was bolt-on, also could for a bucket. Price was reasonable, IMO.

Don't know what your limits or possibilities are with your backhoe bucket.. a pic would help with dimensions. Or let you take it the next step and contact greens-machine.

Beenthere: What the heck? Now I won't be able to sleep until I put one of these on my loader. Fantastic addition!

I am also trying to add a thumb to the 448 backhoe. The thumb itself seems easy to find. There is a Vevor thumb on sale for $205.99, all 1/2" steel with an 18" thumb. My issue is how to add the hydraulics. I am thinking of using the valve off an old Fisher belt drive snow plow. All I need to do is to get the hydraulic flow to the valve. I have used the same valve for other operations. I use one to drive the chute in my old JD 7' snow blower. The fluid pump attaches to the drive shaft via a vee belt running just behind the slip clutch. The hydraulic hoses go from the pump to the fisher valve and from there to a little hydraulic motor that has a chain sprocket on it . Then a bicycle chain runs of that which goes around the base of the chute and turns it. If I can pick up hydraulic fluid near the backhoe valve I would be all set, just need to make up a foot pedal to engage the valve. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thank you.

If you want to have a nicely operating thumb, my recommendation is to put the right valve on, not something that you just laying around. They’re not all that expensive.

I would like to do that and I think that my post was asking for help. I don't know what the "right valve" is. Could you advise me? Thank you

I would be delighted to help you. Earlier in this thread I posted a link to another thread where I detailed everything I went through to develop a thumb for my model 48 backhoe. Everything you need is in that thread. I received a lot of valuable help from people on this forum. Now it’s my turn to return the favor.

Here are a few pics showing the thumb on my 48 backhoe. It has performed flawlessly for several years and is a critical feature on this machine whenever I use it. There are rocks everywhere here, so every time I have to do any digging, it’s super handy to be able to pick them up, versus wrangling to get them balanced in the bucket alone. And being able to handle small to medium sized logs is also a benefit. If I had to do it again, I would do exactly the same thing.

Thank you for your reply. So I went on line and I found a single pole control valve. It is very much like my double pole control vale that I have from my old plow setup but I ordered the new one. Where did you get the fluid from to run the system? I thought that I could pick up the supply and return lines by placing tee's where the Poser Beyond supply and return lines go into and out of the JD control lines come out of the control valve setup underneath the the control valves on the tractor. What I would like to do is have a foot activation for the Frod. Thank you again

Hidden: I think I used a Prince valve, which was around $150. I selected this one because it has a work port relief and also a power beyond port. Both of those are very important. I also selected it because it's a segmented valve and gives me the opportunity to add a second spool sometime in the future for something else. It's all detailed in the thread I referenced. Please read that since it has a tremendous amount of info about the design. I had to learn a great deal while doing this and all that is covered there.

The valve is inserted into the tractor power beyond line that runs the backhoe. So the tractor feeds the new valve, and the power beyond port in the new valve feeds the backhoe. So when you are running the thumb, it will interrupt the operation of the backhoe. I have found that when I'm lowering the boom, that this is a good time to extend the thumb if needed. I think the pressure created by the weight of the boom make it possible to make both motions at the same time. The work port relief is important because it creates a relief point for when the bucket pushes against the thumb. I was particularly concerned that when the thumb and bucket push against each other, that in some positions there could be mechanical advantage that could lead to excessive hydraulic pressure, and something could blow.

In my thread, you'll see the details of how the spool valve is mounted and how it's foot operated. I was going to add some kind of pedal, but the way it's set up now works perfectly and doesn't need anything more. I can lift to retract, and push to extend, which is quite intuitive.

Yes. You need to insert the new thumb valve into the tractor’s power beyond line that now feeds the backhoe. The backhoe is then fed by the power beyond port in the new valve. This will give the thumb priority over the backhoe and interrupt the operation of the backhoe any time you are moving the thumb. However, I have found that I can time my thumb movements any time I am lowering the boom. This way the boom can be moving down, driven by its own weight while the thumb is extending out, driven by valve pressure in preparation to pick up a rock or something.
