JD 455 w/ 47\" Blower PTO Question

I have a 455 with a 47" blower. My pto shaft goes through my front axle. Does anyone know if there should be a bearing guide or bushing in the axle? My pto shaft seems to rattle against the axle and I don't believe this is normal. I purchased the blower used last year and only used it a couple of times. My local John Deere dealer can't tell me and I can't find info on there web sight.

Thanks

Re: JD 455 w/ 47\" Blower PTO Question

Yes, the front pto shaft goes through the front axle but has to be supported by a mounting bracket installed on the left front side of the frame(as you are facing the tractor). This bracket accepts the splined end of the pto shaft. The bracket is attached to the frame by two cap screws and flange nuts. There are three flange nuts on the bracket itself that have to be tightened which keeps the bearing assembly from moving out of alignment. This bracket is a bit tricky to install and it must be installed correctly or you will tear up the bearing. I know because it has happened to me when the unit was brand new. The servicing dealer installed incorrectly and the bearing melted within 5 hrs. The JD part # for the Front PTO KIT is BM17330. There is no bushing etc on the front axle where the splined pto shaft goes through. If your pto shaft is rubbing on the axle then something is bent. My pto shaft does not touch the front axle at all. Hope this helps.

cep56,

Ditto what bwc said. The fit through the splined bearing carrier will be very tight and will make installation and removal a bit of a challenge, however, it will not wobble during use. I think you're really going to enjoy this combination. Depending on your slope and situation, you may need weights (I used two JD wts on each rear wheel with my 425 as well as chains) but I had a lot of driveway and some portions are very steep.

Your local dealer can look up the parts in the parts 'book' and tell you exactly what you need. Don't accept the "I don't know" excuse, IMO. Or find another dealer (being polite about it /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif )

What John Deere Dealer doesn't know what you are talking about? I can't believe that.

What the others have said is true, it's just a bracket with a bearing to carry the front pto, comes with the pto kit. When it was removed from the previous owner's tractor, that bracket was probably never removed, and now you don't have it. If that's the case, it would be worth checking on a few other details. Are there hose loops for the hydraulic hoses that go from the tractor to the blower? I think there are 2, one that mounts to an engine mount along the frame, and another possibly near the front of the tractor frame. Aslo, on your hydraulic valve, on the backside from where you plug in your hoses for the snowblower, there should be a shut off valve on one of the lines. That is so you can shut oil flow off going to the tractor's mower deck lift cylinder, and forcing oil out to the chute rotation cylinder. It isn't critical, but basically bypasses that lift circuit giving quicker response to the chute rotation.
Did you buy the package at a dealer? Were the 2 items traded in from separate customers?

Re: JD 455 w/ 47\" Blower PTO Question

I attached a picture from the JD parts site that should show the front bearing in question. Maybe it will help. You can access the parts section on the WEB and get the part numbers you need. As stated, a dealer should be able to do that without a problem.

I just bought a nice 455 from my dealer. They called the other day and said they had a front quick hitch with the front PTO kit if I was interested. He offered it to me at a good price and is holding it for me to look at. I'm glad I saw this post to make sure all the parts are there.

I want to look for a 47" blower if this hitch pans out.

Re: JD 455 w/ 47\" Blower PTO Question

Dutch445,

Thanks for the message, The dealer is in upstate NY, Just north of Pulaski. It's not that they don't know what they are talking about. I had a person assisting me that really didn't know what I needed as well as I didn't know what I needed. We looked through on-line parts diagrams and actually came across the pto kit several times but she wasn't sure the kit was for my blower and tractor. I bought the 455 new from them about four years ago. The blower I bought from an individule who had the newer 465? model and all I recieved was the blower and pto shafts. I did get the hose loops also.

Thanks again,
Charlie

BWC, and all others

Thanks for the replys. I don't believe my shaft is bent, I think it's hitting the axle because it's unsupported and flopping around. I think once I install my support system (correctly I hope), This will take care it.

Thanks,
Charlie

Re: JD 455 w/ 47\" Blower PTO Question

HOLD ON!!!!
If you bought a blower off of a newer X465 tractor, then there are more issues here. Yes, it mounts to the front of the tractor, but the front pto kit is entirely different. You will need to purchase a front pto kit for the 455 tractor. That kit will include the proper driveshaft, and bearing support. Actually, the upstop and driveshaft that are on the snowblower are different depending on what tractor it's used on, but they may still work. Exercise caution, and check driveshaft lengths for clearance, especially when raising the snowblower.
You may find the hoses aren't as neat as they could be, the hydraulic fittings on your tractor are on a different side from the X series tractor.
good luck

Re: JD 455 w/ 47\" Blower PTO Question

If what you just said was true, the new X series PTO arrangement is not like the old. The new has an axle that has a 'hole' built in that the PTO runs through, eliminating the bearing arrangement used on the older 400 series. You best do some refiguring, and please, our answers will make a lot more sense if you give us the right information up front. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I am surprised, if the dealer employee knew what you had, that 'she' didn't inform you of the mismatched tractor and blower.

edit: Also agree with what Dutch445 said.
