JD 4600
Hi All,
I just picked up a JD 4600 at auction and I am excited. A friend has a JD 48 backhoe that I can buy cheaply. It is coming off a JD 4310. Does the 4310 and the 4600 use the same side mount brackets? If not, does anyone have a part number for the 4600 mounting brackets? I have been trying to look at the JD parts diagrams but can't figure it out. Also I would like to use new bolts to mount the brackets. I have read that people have bought the bolts from JD. Are they special? Or would any grade 8 bolt work? The 4600 has a set of rear remotes. Can that be used for the 48 or do I have to buy the Power beyond kit?

Last question: I am also looking for a JD 460 loader for the 4600. Problem is they aren't made anymore and I can't find a used one. Are there any other loader recommendations that will mount easily to a 4600?

I don't know any thing about the backhoe mounting. I have heard in the past that some of these earlier JD compact tractors had aluminum transmission housings and axle tubes. You may want make sure you have clean and true mounting surfaces/ clean tapped holes for the backhoe mounting. Any questionable tapped holes you may want to heli-coil. Make sure you have the correct grip length on the hardware. Later.

the 4310 is a smaller frame than the 4600. so im guessing the brackets may be different. A JD dealer could give you the part numbers and tell you if they are available .the bolt for the backhoe are metric and sometimes odd length. you do need power beyond to run the backhoe.

now John deere does currently make a loader thst fits your 4600, it's the 440R . I just had 1 put on my 4700. it's not cheap. but it's a beast of a loader.

Make sure to service your hydraulic system as it's also the oil for your hst if you have a hydo transmission.

I don't know for sure if the mounts are the same. they look like they could be . but without having a earlier set to measure i cant be sure ? You can order the correct mounts for the 4600 when you order a 440R , you just have to tell the sales guy . it was no extra cost compared to the same set up for the 4044 tractor that I could see.

the aluminum comment is only applies to the 4100 to 4400 models. the 4500 to 4700 were all steel !

Congrats on the 4600. I was told that JD does not offer the mounting plates any longer for the 48 backhoe.

I have a 4600 that came with backhoe brackets, but no backhoe. Like you, I also found a backhoe for low $ that did not have the brackets, so I thought I was in good shape. On my machine, there was no undercarriage, just big mounting plates bolted to the rear end, and the axle housings. When I mounted the backhoe, I immediately noticed that the mounting plates were loose. The prior owner had run the backhoe and failed to check for loose bolts that secure the plates to the rear end. The threaded holes in the axle housings were all hogged out and oblong, but the other holes in the rear end were OK. I was very fortunate to find a retired machinist who removed the plates, and built an undercarriage that goes forward and ties to the loader mounting posts. Rather than using the destroyed holes in the axle housings, he built clamps that grab onto the axle housing.

All that is to say that locating the mounting hardware to your 4600 may be difficult to find, and to make sure that your mount includes an undercarriage. I have heard stories about the smaller machines that have aluminum axle housings ending up with cracked rear ends. Fortunately, the 4600 is all cast iron, so you're good in that respect.

I love my 48 backhoe and hope that you're able to get it mounted for not too much $$. I added a hydraulic thumb to mine, and that is a game-changer!!!!!
