Thanks again for all the replies!

The conservation program he is entering specifies the tree spacing, but I think I was wrong- I believe it is an 8'x10' grid. He will be planting trees native to our area including- walnut, cherry, and several varieties of oaks. We plan to maintain some of the trees so they may become valuable later. (probably not in our lifetimes though!)

I'll have him look into the narrow tractors. My concerns with them would be stability on some of our hills?

The EH 3 point hitch sounds nice, but I'm not sure how useful it would be for his immediate uses. He definately wants the 540/540E pto.

I suppose the 5x25 makes the most sense for him, I just like the manueverability of my small CUT, and the jobs I can do with it. Of course, I only have 2.5 acres compared to his 200.

How is the best way to get loader specs? What is the difference between the 400x and 400cx? Is it just the self-leveling, or are lift capacities different? What about on the 5x25 series? It seems I can't navigate the Deere website when it comes to loaders.

Thanks again- Jason

Pix of a JD 5400N without fender skirts. The rear tires are the same size as the fronts on my conventional utility.

For my hills I have a JD350 dozer. Pix of a little gem I dug out of a 100% slope or 45 degree sidehill. The bottom skidplate is about ankle high off the ground. Tracks are 48" wide and hood stands 48" off the ground. Blade is 6' wide for scale.

As long as you are getting the Cab and the PowrReverser transmission, (which it sounds like you are) the EH hitch is only a $376.00 (retail list price) option. The added attributes of the EH hitch itself aside - the ability for your father to raise and lower the 3-Point with a switch on the right rear fender (thus allowing much easier implement hook-up) is more than worth the money, IMHO... :)

I have a 4720 Hydro and think your father would love it. I pull a 3-14 bottom plow, 7 ft disc and a 1650 lb Brown tree cutter with it. Also have a 400 loader and a Long 72' HD 4 in 1 bucket. No cab but have a FOPS as I work in the woods too much with the Brown. I have R4 tires as my hunt club is in a rock quarry. He will love the hydro and the ability to turn in tight spots. I would suggest a full length skid plate for the hydro working in the woods.

For out in the open a 5x25 would be the ticket but not in the woods.

Loader specs ARE on the Deere website but are hard to find. You need to go to "ag home" then click on "material handling" then front-end loaders should be a category you can click on. I don't know WHY they aren't smart enough to link the loaders directly from the tractor pages.

On the 5x25, I think you have a choice of a 522 or 542 FEL, and self-leveling or non-leveling in the 542. I suspect that the 542 is the most common choice by far.

The 4720 is absolutely perfect for what your dad will be doing.
