JD 48 hoe on 4610 & 4710\'s

Hi guys, thinking of buying a 4710 with the 48 hoe and have a few questions I'm hoping the forum can help me with.

1. I been told that the 48 hoe has NO FlOAT position on the boom spool valve. Is this correct?
I have a Bradco 408 hoe on my 970 and it has a Float mode for the boom that I find handy when going for a flat bottom trench. If this is true, I am surprised because Amerquip, who I understand makes the 48 hoe, puts the float mode on the JD 48 equivalent model, the 8600 hoe.

2. Is theire anybody out there running a Bradco 509 or 511 hoe on their 4610 or 4710 tractor? The 509 has a 9 foot depth and the 511 an 11 foot depth. I am curious as to how these hoes fit on to the tractor. Both hoes are listed by Bradco for these tractors.

3. Never drove a hydro tractor and wonder whether brake steering is as easily done on the two pedal hydro tractors as on the manual tranny tractors? I look at some single pedal hydro tractors and could see that brake steering on these could diffcult.

4. Also looking at the 110TLB, but am wondering if the non-removable loader would be a major problem when mowing?
Any comments here would be appreciated.

This is a great group:
thanks again,
george

It DOES have a float position -- you push the control handle all the way forward and the bucket floats.

Brake pedal (on the left) on these tractors is split, and allows you to brake rear wheels individually. The directional pedals (one fwd, on backward) are on the right.

Re: JD 48 hoe on 4610 & 4710\'s

Sorry to say, my 47 doesn't have float. I can't find any reference to it in my 47-48-49 manual...

The HST is a dream.

Re: JD 48 hoe on 4610 & 4710\'s

Bebster, thanks for the prompt reply.
Also, dealer tells me that the width of the JD 4&1 bucket for the 460 loader is 61 inches. Is this correct? I know the standard bucket goes to 73 inches. That 460 loader looks like it could easily handle a wider then 61 inch 4&1.
I have a aftermarket 64 inch Long 4&1 bucket on my 440 loader and would like to go a little wider than that if I could.

thanks again,
george

Re: JD 48 hoe on 4610 & 4710\'s

That is the width of my 4N1 on my 430 loader. I bet the bucket is the same, but not really sure about that. It's a good bucket -- plenty strong and versatile. I ordered a tooth bar for mine to make it even more useful.

The bucket attaches easily, and I find I can swap it out for my pallet forks pretty quickly. Hopefully that's the case with the aftermarket bucket you're looking at.

Have you checked to see if Deere carries a wider bucket? Many of Deere's accessories are made by someone else, and that may be the case with the 4N1.

Re: JD 48 hoe on 4610 & 4710\'s

I cannot answer your backhoe questions however, I may be able to help on your others. You love the feel and design of the hst. The e hydro is an awesome tranny and it is very powerful and you don't get any kickback like on the regular style hydros. I use my 4710 to mow my grass with a 3pt mower all I do is take the bucket off it works fine. Width is the main killer of lawn mowing the added two feet of length has never caused any problems to speak off. So do the same thing on the 110 and I see no problem with it.

Re: JD 48 hoe on 4610 & 4710\'s

Concerning the float on the 48 hoe. I have mine stored for the winter but tried the levers yesterday. I didn't notice a float position like the FEL. Is the float position non locking and you need to hold it there or maybe mine doesn't have it?

Re: JD 48 hoe on 4610 & 4710\'s

On my Bradco the boom float position is all the way forward and yes I have to hold it there. I think it is too dangereous to put a detent for boom drop. While holding in float I drag the dipper back with the bucket teeth flat. With just the weight of the boom as down pressure it is easy to plane the bottom of the trench flat.
I talked to Amerquip factory people and they tell me that they include boom float in their version (8600) but do not put it on the 48 hoe they build for JD. Also, they do not make a mounting kit to attach the 8600 to the 46 and 4710 JD's.
No surprise here.
However, one of our forum friends with a 48 hoe says he has the float mode on his 48 hoe.

Re: JD 48 hoe on 4610 & 4710\'s

How do you get to the float position on your Bradco? Do you get the dipper and bucket in position and then quickly move the boom position lever all the way forward? If you went slow I would think the boom would try and lift the tractor up. I'm sure it would be an interesting test to find out you didn't have a floating boom feature. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I see the boom float useful for me. Currently I have been feathering the boom up as I was bringing the dipper through. Takes a bit of touch.
