I am about to buy a tractor. After many years of construction, I was around Kubotas and always liked them. I looked at a L3200 -L3400 and liked them.

My grandfather, who died when I was 3 years old at the age of 72, I am 50, had the first tractor in 4 county's in the Texas Panhandle. It was a JD. Both my brothers own JD's. I am leaning toward a JD 5045D. I have a small place, use it to disc, cut grass small ranch duty. I like the 5045D. I dont think I would really ever need the 4x4. I will also use a tiller on it for a small orchard and 1 acre garden on top of 9 acres of pasture. there is only $1,500 difference between the 2 at the dealers here in N.Texas. How about the 5045D?

This will be my first personal tractor and I will keep it. I know the loader/backhoe tractors used in construction are a little different. Thanks for letting me join the conversation.

Welcome to TBN

I would recommend you consider the 5045E if the difference in price is that little. Much better to have the extra traction if your needs change later on. If you have just one tractor I would definately go with a 4x4, much harder to get them stuck. I have some friends around Spearman and they have both 4x4 and 4x2 tractors, the newer ones all being 4x4.

I agree with you the 5045d is a good small farm utility tractor. I would upsize the rear tires and load with fluid. Great little tractor ready to do what you wish.

There is about $4,500 difference between the 4x4 E and the 2x4 D. Thanks for you thoughts.

If you never plan to have an FEL on this tractor, you can get by. If you have any thoughts of adding the FEL go ahead and go 4WD. Many have wished for 4WD, but I have yet to hear any wishing to go backwards. Too many stating this to not give it strong consideration, in my opinion.

True. The more I do, the more I realize that the FEL is a must. Spent the day moving dirt and rocks by shovel and hoe. The kind with wooden handles that fit your hand. Sure would have been nice. I am sold on the FEL

I agree with getting 4wd. I just bought a 5055e and it's a different tractor in 4wd. If adding a loader is on your list then it's a must. A full bucket really unloads the rears. Don't forget resale, huge difference with 4wd.

I bought my 5045D with 512 loader over two years ago, and I still love it! Have not missed 4WD at all. Tough tractor!

Don't know what the OP finally decided but with the weather headed his way this morning I would hope he has mfwd.

I say let your budget and needs dictate what to get. Just comparing the price difference the MFWD cost around 1/4 more than the 2wd. It had been around 15 years since I'd operated a 2wd tractor, then recently I ran across a deal on a nice old 2040. Now I don't have a loader, but honestly I haven't missed the 4wd on it. With the new 6' box blade on it I have moved a whole lot of dirt in a few hours, including smoothing over the holes where my dirt contractor stuck his D6 dozer 4 times! Don't get me wrong, I love having all wheels pulling but if money is an issue I would take the heavier 2wd with more hp over a lighter 4wd for the same price. If money is no object definitely get the 4wd, but if your land isn't terribly hilly the 5045d may do just fine for you. Good heavy 2wd tractors are very under rated IMO.
