JD 5045d Problem

In the range shift, I have A, B and R.
Int the speed shift I have 1,2,3 and R.
Complete stops are required during range shifts.
Speed shifts can be accomplished while rolling.

Brakes had been freed up and it rolls freely now.

Rear and front wheels are being spread out to 78" out-to-out for better stability on the 30 degree slope along the bayou.

A front weight bracket plus two weights are being added to keep the front wheels in better contact with the ground whenever the 6' Woods Shredder or 6' Box Scraper or the 9' Boom Pole are attached.

Most of the problems resulted from my belief that my experience with my JD 1070 would be adequate to transition to a new machine.

I found the owner of an identical 5045D at a nearby trailer dealer and plan to hire an hour of his time to make me completely familiar with everything from front to back.

Sounds like things are improving and the issue was with the brakes. Would you mind sharing what was done to free up the brakes?

Down the road when you get ready to change the fuel filter. Fill the new one before you put it on. This is what I do and I have NEVER had to bleed it to get it start.

When the service manager called to say the brake problem had been worked out, I was so grateful I forgot to ask the why question.
I'll know in a few days when I go back.

You bring up something else when changing the fuel filter.
I could run completely dry with the old JD1070, refill and start right up.
No bleeding necessary.
Your comment suggests that line bleeding may be needed on the 5045D if I run out of diesel or if the fuel filter is changed.
I'll start home working that topic but perhaps you can share your experience.
I never run out of fuel but my 14 year old neighbor/helper sometimes has something else on his mind when shredding and will let the tank run dry.

I also have never ran out of fuel. Since we both have the same engine and looking at JD parts we use the same fuel filter. Is OMSJ301049 the correct owners manual for your tractor? If yes, you will see it says need to bleed tractor after replacing the fuel filter. My fuel system, which I believe is like yours (double check with the dealer) is gravity feed ie no fuel pump/transfer pump, hence you need to bleed the tractor. As mentioned before I have not needed to bleed the tractor when replace the fuel filter, by filling it first.

Hope that helps. I have had to bleed someone elses 5000 tractor and it was not big deal.

My manual number is identical except that it also says Issue C1.
The tractor was assembled in India with a build tag dated August 2012.

Nice to have another 5045D owner that I can contact and vice versa.
Mine is turbocharged with the turbo mounted way in the back via a very long air line from the air filter mounted up front.
The fuel system components list includes a fuel injection pump.
I hope to get coached on all the systems soon so I'll be better informed especially on topics that aren't apparent in the manual.
One change I made was to the exhaust pipe.
60 pecan trees with low limbs kept hanging on the vertical stack so I cut the exhaust pipe at the low end of the bend where it passes under the hood so the exhaust shoots out horizontally and in such a way that I never smell it and rain can never enter.

Glad to hear the brake issues have been resolved. Now shifting speeds should work on the go.
Stopping to change ranges should not be a big deal. Remember reverse is not a range.

Have you tried turning the PTO shaft with the tractor not running? It may have a hydraulic brake on the PTO shaft that will not allow it to turn with the tractor running, but shut off might, worth checking.

JD5210 gave some good tips for hooking up the PTO shaft. I find the spring loaded pin easier than the collar type of yoke. My main problem is the PTO guard on the tractor limits acess for my big hands. but I refuse to remove it.

I think you will like your tractor once you get some operating hours.

Several others have likewise recommended running the PTO for a while first since the tractor had been inactive for over a year and then trying to hand turn when in neutral and then again with engine dead.
The dealer assures me there is an internal brake that locks the PTO and he hears many complaints about the attachment difficulties from other owners.
I'm hoping he is incorrect, but will try every way I can to resolve the issue or somehow adapt.
There is just something about South louisiana summers and hooking up a misaligned PTO shaft that fries my bacon.
I have similar feelings about that bulky guard that comes with a new PTO drive shaft and have solved it as an obstruction to greasing the U joints by removing and melting in a burn barrel.
My Woods shredder has the slip ring attachment which should be easer than the pin if it wasn't for the PTO guard cramping access.
Hadn't thought about removing the top plate from the PTO guard but may do that as well if the aggravation factor tops out.

I am acutely safety conscious and make sure the engine is off before working around an unguarded rotating shaft.

Your last point is well taken and a heavy educational briefing is scheduled before doing any serious work.

I am new to this forum format (1st time) and thought perhaps that the discussion had wandered off to topics that wouldn't interest anyone else.
JD 5510 has been particularly helpful with links to ops. manual references and JD parts suppliers which I assumed everyone already knew about and would think too elementary for the experienced folks on this board.
My tractor is back with wheels widened out to the width of my Mower (~78") so I am less likely to snag on a fence post or tree now.
The JD dealer discovered the rear wheels had been filled with water.
Glad the JD mechanic didn't get injured when he undid the last nut that was holding the tire in place on the rim.
Front weight bracket was installed but dismayed that the weight of it didn't settle the front wheel contact problem.
I'm picking up 2 suitcase weights tomorrow that JD forgot to install and hope that keeps the front wheels end snug to the ground.
I'm buying an hour of instruction time from one of JD's farmer/mechanic types to make sue I understand everything that has changed from my experience with my old JD 1070.
I'm particularly interested in the turbocharger which is a new thing (to me) especially since the manual and mechanics point out the problems that can occur with them if the restart and shutdown procedures aren't followed.
Seems the days of shutting down and going on to other tasks have to be modified in deference to the cool-down idle period required for the turbo.

Can someone tell me if it is OK to change hydraulic fluid filter on a yearly basis without changing the fluid ?

Is it possible to remove and replace the filter without draining the fluid?
