I always keep an eye out for a nice older Massey but I find few in my area that aren't all worn out with high hours. I know the 35's and 135's were considered to be very solid and reliable (I actually own a 35), but I don't know much about the ones coming after them that have the 2xx model numbers so maybe have shied away from them.

I see an awful lot of models like 230, 235, 240, 245, some of them ending with an "S" and now this one in the picture is a 241. Maybe you guys can give me a rundown on all the "2 Hundred" mocels and if some are better than others and some are to be avoided. I seem to remember reading somewhere that there were certain models with steering problems that could be expensive to repair. The 35's and the 135's were US and British made, I believe, but then I think they started coming from Poland?, Turkey?, India? maybe. Thanks for any advice.

My neighbor has a 243 that has been very reliable. I have noticed a small leak in his P steering box. Can't tell you if it's a big deal/problem. Other than that, it's worked well for him abt. ten yrs.

I'm not familiar with the NH but I would look at the M series Kubota, M5040, as it would be more comparable to the JD.
Has the M5040 been replaced by the M5640? I think even the bare bones M5640SU would be about $2000 more than the other two I mentioned. But I will take a look at the M series 2WD equivalent in the next few days and see what it goes for.

I looked at a 241 MF and it had a perkins diesel in it. Nice basic tractor.
If your in the right area, there's been good deals on Farmtrac. Escort of India was dropping their
renamed "Fords" and stepping back from operating in NA. Diamond R though is apparently
taking over importing the same Farmtracs and re-establishing dealers.

Sharp Massey! I learned how to drive on a Ferguson TO20, then we got a MF 165 (still have today), and I purchased a 255 and I sold it a few years ago. I wish I had the 255 back. Massey Ferguson in my opinion made and still makes one of the best Utility tractors out there. Only thing in my opinion on older Massey Fergusons to watch that is not offered today is Multi-power. They claimed it was good if you changed hydraulic oil and filter all the time but as you know most farmers did not. We made sure not to get the Multi-power and went with the 8 speed transmission. The front ends can get a wobble that is only noticeable at high speeds on the road that eventually needs repaired. Overall a very solid heavy built machine.
