2013 JD 5085e, cab, FEL, 380 hrs. I have noticed the last couple of days putting out hay etc., a noticeable increase in the engine "dieseling" under virtually no load. My first thought is a fuel issue, but was wondering if anyone else had encountered this. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I'm curious what you mean by "dieseling" ??

What is fuel filter history? fuel history... i.e. how old?

I would check the fuel filter for water or just replace it and see if that helps. My 2030 "surges" when the fuel filter starts to plug. New fuel filter cures it.

Thanks for the responses beenthere and zebrafive. By dieseling I mean the louder knocking sound when a diesel engine is put under load. Not abnormal sounding except the fact that it is not under load. After some thought I too suspect a fuel issue and will drain the water from the filter and see if that makes a difference. As to the history, I purchased the tractor locally with 345 hours on it and fresh oil. I am not sure when the fuel filter was changed but the seller seemed to be conscientious. It is under warranty but only for another 6 weeks so I am trying to gather some opinions just in case. Thanks again and I will report back.

Ambient temperature can make a noticeable difference in how the engine sounds. Has the temperature been cooler when you noticed the change?

Both my 5100E and 6115D do this occasionally during cold weather. In my case, it is not related to water in the fuel,as I have water filters on both transfer tanks and drain any water in the fuel filters regularly. Doesn't seem to be an issue.

Sorry for the delay in responding. The weather has been a little cooler and I didn't notice any performance issues related to the sound. It was just different than what I had gotten used to in my limited use of the tractor.
The reason for the delay in responding is that I had a winter service "special" done to the tractor at the dealership. I did this because there were a few minor warranty issues I wanted to have addressed before the tractor went out out of warranty. Of course the tractor came back to me with real issues instead of the minor ones it went in for. After 4 bales of hay (about an hour) the hydraulics started getting loud and jumpy, like restricted flow from a dirty sump screen. Of course I had just had the hydraulics serviced. I thought the fluid in the sight window was pale like it had air in it so I had them come back and get it. It is there now and I am waiting to hear. If interested I will keep you posted. Thanks

Just curious, were any of your minor issues hydraulic related? Such as any small leaks? Makes you wonder if it could be incorrectly installed filter or a defective one?
