Waaaaaaayyyyyy back at the beginning of this thread, somebody asked if anyone had a 5103/203/303. Anybody??? I'm looking hard at the 5103 and would like some feedback.
I recently bought a JD 5203 with loader and extra(?) remote SCV and, being new to diesel engines, have one question. The engine smokes when started but stops in a few seconds. Is this normal for a diesel? The engine now has all of 13 hours on it.

My brother bought a 5103 2WD a few months back. So far, he loves it and has no troubles. He got it with the upgraded seat and SCVs without a loder for 13k and some change. He says he notices the power difference between it and my other brother's 5105. I think the European style fenders look a little funny at first, but they grow on you. They do their job at least.

I really like my 5303. It does the job and then some. I like the fenders too. They are very sturdy and you can put anything on them. The dealer told me that the fenders are steel and heavy duty because in India they are used as personal vehicles for the people. He said when they were there 10 people would be riding on the tractors!!! Talk about a lawsuit waiting to happen in this country. Here's a pic of mine.
Cowboydoc,
Thanks for the photo of your 5303. Great looking tractor. Would the 5303 handle a 6X6 round bale on fel and 3ph at same time. Also do you feel it's design, ie, frt axle, etc. would stand it over time? Also stability on slightly rolling terrain. I'm considering this model for my next tractor. I value your input.

Definite yes to all of your questions. The only drawback is the loader is NOT quick attach. It bolts on and off so that's a pain if you are going to take it off and on. It easily handles a bale on the front and back though. The design is the exact same as the much more expensive 5x20 series. You just don't get all the frills of the 20 series. The axle is solid and very thick. No problems going to happen there. The engine, transmission and drivetrain are exactly the same one as used in the 20 series which has been a very solid performer. It's a nice solid tractor and I don't think you can find a better deal on a tractor out there.
Thanks Cowboydoc, exactly the kind of info I needed from a 5303 owner. Sounds like what I need. The bucket not being QT is a little bothersome. I never remove my loader but take the bucket off quite often on my present QT rig.

The bucket IS quick attach. You can put bale spear, pallet forks, grapple, etc. on in about a minute. It's the loader part that you have to bolt on and off the tractor.
