HI everyone,
I am in the process of putting new brakes on my 96 5300, when I got the first side apart the pressure plate was seized. I was told that the little return springs cold be part of the problem and not to put them back in. Has anyone else had any experience with 5300 brakes seizing up and did you put the springs back in when you put them back together?
Thanks
Donnie

Recently been a thread or two on the springs in these brakes, IIRC. Maybe a search (albeit that is tough to do a search on TBN) will bring something up for you, or someone will chime in shortly to help out. Hang tight.

The return springs have been the source of problem of brake drag in some cases. I have never tried leaving them out. The springs act as dowel pins to align the pressure plate and I am not sure if things would work well without them. Deere has redesigned the springs a couple of times, so I wouls recommend replacing them with the newer design. If someone would design a dowel pin that would replace the return springs, I thing that would work OK. Any of our machinist members willing to give that a try? Make the dowel be a slip fit into the axle housing. That would make them similar to older tractors before return springs were installed.
