JD 5300 Transmission Shifter

1996 JD 5300 with collar shift transmission.
The gear shift has lost its normal side to side travel limits and instead has to be pulled far to the left (against the set bottom nearly) to engage the left two gears (reverse over and back etc.) It is like the lever has lost its travel restriction entirely. You can hunt around and engage the gears so it seems it may be in the linkage.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
