JD 5300 won\'t park!

Was out doing some tree work today and the day was going great. I use the FEL to provide some "assist" in my directional felling techniques for my tree work, and it has been working exceptionally well. Typically I put her in "snail" speed and put some weight on the tree with the FEL, then put her in park and lay the tree down. Done hundreds that way. Today, however, noticed she would not stop when put in park. Kind of scary, as there is no way to keep her in place on unlevel terrain short of grounding the bucket and boxblade. The transmission still goes into all gears and into park, it's just that park won't hold, not even a little bit. Anyone have an idea on the fix?

Re: JD 5300 won\'t park!

Normally "park" activates a small pin or lever and puts it into a hole or slot to lock the transmission. If too much pressure on it, it will break or shear off, as in putting in park while moving, ( or pushing up against a tree). After fixing your transmission, I would recommend leaving it in gear and shutting it off to apply pressure.

Re: JD 5300 won\'t park!

Lou,

I'm not sure what a JD 5300 is, but it sounds big. At least big compared to my JD 855. Even with my little tractor, I like to help "guide" trees to the ground.

Does the 5300 have a parking brake?

Once my tractor is in place, I set the parking brake to keep the pressure applied while I do the chainsaw thing. Seems to work well and I don't think it's hard on the tractor.

Re: JD 5300 won\'t park!

Norm,

1. I believe I am going to find out that you are right. The combination of putting her in park and then applying additional pressure with the FEL probably has sheared off the pawl or whatever it is that you mention engages the transmission. With no other means of parking, this is on my must fix list.

Thanks for your assist Norm,

Lou

Re: JD 5300 won\'t park!

OkieG,

1. The 5300 is a medium sized tractor with about 50hp. It is a good size for tree work: skidding, stacking, pushing, etc. It's a step down from say a 5410, which has a turbo.

2. My modus operandi in felling a tree is similar to yours, except I don't have a separate parking brake with the synch shuttle trans, instead I have to rely on the "park" position on the transmission selector.

3. I believe Norm (previous post) has pinpointed my problem. No easy fix as I had hoped. Someone will probably be looking at my 5300's innards to get her right.
