JD 5325; Landini Mistral 50
Since last winter I have had an intermittent starting problem with my 7-8 year old JD5325. I can turn the key and nothing happens....sometimes a click. If I immediately tried again the tractor will start many times. Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 attempts to get it to fire. The difficulty is more significant when cool outside temps. Anybody had this problem in the past? I'm thinking I might have a problem starter but not absolutely sure yet.

I had intermediate starting issues with my 5055D. Turned out to be the negative cable to the frame bolt was loose.

Talk to your dealers service manager and see if he thinks this JD kit will solve your problem. John Deere Starting Improvement Relay Kit - AM17421

Can we assume that you are not on your original battery? How recent was it replaced?

Yep I checked the neg wire to frame and reset. Battery was changed in 2015.

Take the ground cable off & sand it til it's shiny, sand the frame the same way, then spray with the red battery stuff. Run a wire brush into the frame threads as well, it only takes a very small amount of rust to cause the problem.
I had to do that the other day, replaced the battery in January of this year.

MF283 - Will do. Thank you for the reply. I assume you mean spray with a battery terminal protector?

Just a quick report back to say that cleaning the ground did not do the trick. Looking at replacing the starter which looks to be a solenoid and motor combined. JD OEM is in the $330 range whereas electric speciality stores are ~$73. I'm guessing there's little difference. Any thoughts?

I don't have any experience with the "specialty store" starters. I would be concerned about quality at that price, but on the other hand, it is not that much money to risk trying. Working for a dealer, we need to warranty our repairs, so we always use oem parts. That way if a part does fail within a year, Deere stands behind it. My guess would be that a new solenoid might fix your old starter, but a replacement solenoid may cost as much as a complete aftermarket starter?

In doing a search of other forums I found DB Electrical to be recommended. Purchased from them with 1 year warranty and has already been shipped. Should see it by Friday.

New starter motor in and no improvement. I'm beginning to think that the ignition switch might be the culprit. Need to find a JD 5325 electrical diagram to see what other points might be the culprit.

Consider taking a look at selectmanuals.com to get a downloadable tech manual which includes a wiring diagram. Maybe your dealer can tell you if you want TM2197 and or TM2187. Or your dealer maybe willing to give you a copy of the wiring diagram.

Thanks JD5210. I did purchase the online manuals. They come as a set(TM2197 & TM2187 and a few service notes) from an online download. Went through the wiring diagrams and diagnostic tree as it pertains to starting problems. Decided the likely culprit, with intermittent starts, was the starter relay. Ordered one up and it arrived this afternoon. Thought I would at least get started this evening as I had an hour to spare. Pulled the instrument panel back and the cowling off and it became clear what was going on. The starter relay & wiring was covered with a mouse chalet. One guy inside that got the boot. Cleared it out and checked the wiring and relay. Wiring looks good but the relay was a bit corroded on one of the posts. Changed out the relay and left it hanging so that I can get a better look at everything in the morning and do a bit more cleaning. Thanks again.

Sounds like your making progress. If replacing the relay does not solve your problem. Consider just posting the starting system page of the manual (post back if you do not know how to do that) and I or one of the other members should be able to help you walk through it.

Cranking fast and not starting? Cranking slow and not starting. Not cranking at all? Here is a question that nobody has ever answered, i guess people would rather guess and throw random $$$ parts at a machine instead . Measure the voltage between the starter's main + stud and the starter's cast iron case while cranking.
Have you plugged in the block heater when temperatures are near freezing and lower?
Is there an intake manifold heater ?

Did the starter relay fix the problem?
