When I had my in-ground pool removed, the guy back filled the hole nicely. He had a large back hoe and he drove down into the hole as he was filling it to compact the fill. Did a good job as it's been 4 years now and there is no sinking of the dirt.
Had a different guy bring out a small truck load of pulverized black dirt and he spread it around to cover the fill.
I used a 6 X 8 foot piece of chain link to level it out. Pulled it behind my small garden tractor. I worked really well. After spreading grass seed, I use the chain link again to work the seeds into the dirt.
The lawn turned out really nice.
