JD 5400 Joystick Repair

Howdy Ya'll?

I have a JD 5400 with the 540 Loader Hydraulic Setup.

The pistons (Part RE55057) broke and I am having trouble with the repair.

And have tried to work through the repair but I am having trouble figuring out how to remove the piston.

Here is what the Joystick Assembly looks like


I removed these

Snap Rings from behind the nuts. But the nuts still don't come off. Am I missing something? I looks like there might be 2 sets of snap rings per piston, is that true? Is there anything else holding them in place?

Not sure if I can be much help, but I believe you need to remove the locking mechanism first before the pistons will come out. Parts 11 thru 18. I think you need to drive out small roll pin first(#17). We usually install complete joystick assembly when a customer has issues with it since labor costs plus parts will be at or near cost of complete joystick anyway. Also have seen failure of plastic housing after replacement of pistons, so for us to warranty the work, we prefer to install complete assembly.

Thanks, solid advice. I removed the locking mechanism. Is the same procedure recommended for removal of the whole joystick assembly? Disconnecting at the pistons? Or somewhere else?
