When you turn the key all I get is a fast turning sound, loud hum. I replaced the starter motor and solid about a year ago when we had similar symptoms. Could the starter or solid be bad already. We do tend to start and stop it often, Probably more so than the average operation.

If the starter spins with a rapid whirring sound and the engine does not turn over your problem could well be connected to the starter. When the starter spins it should force the Bendix to engage the flywheel turning the engine over. If the Bendix is gummed up it may not move freely to engage the flywheel. If it is broken internally the result is the same - it will not engage. Unfortunately a new Bendix may be almost as much as a new starter with Bendix. Check into a local starter repair shop if you have one nearby. They can probably fix you up for less than the John Deere dealer.

Thanks guys but it seems to be a much bigger problem. We got the starter off ok, but then discovered that there seems to be a lot of damage to the ring gear on the flywheel. Some teeth are worn half way through. I could not believe it. So this means the engine has to be split and a new ring gear installed? I am thinking of thousands of dollars. I doubt if we could do it nor do we have the tools either. Any suggestions or ideas in how best to proceed. We will have to make some adjustments for cattle feeding and moving wood bins with a JD970. Don't have pallet forks for it yet. Any idea

There is a temporary "bandaid" you might try to get by for a while. I've seen it done many times.

First tighten the fan belt. It needs to be tight. Then reach in and pull on the fan blade while pushing in on the belt. It can be rather awkward, but once you get the hang of it you can turn the engine just enough to put some different ring gear teeth in front of the starter. The starter can then engage and get you going. No solution by any means, but it may keep you going until you make a decision on the repair.
