jd 650 brakes

I'm helping friend with brakes. Right side actuator locked,left side working. Brakes have not been adjusted in long time, not sure how much brake is left. No manual. How do I check/adjust brakes. I have adjusted brake rods,thats how I found right side locked. Thanks for help.

Assuming the 650 brakes are similar to my 850.
I would follow the brake linkage down to where the linkage attachs to the brake cam arm, remove the pin, remove the 6 bolts that hold the brake cover.
Remove the cover (the brake lining should come out with the cover.
This is easy to do and makes it much easier to check out the lining and free up a stuck cam arm.

Here is a photo of inside the cover on an 850.
The brake shoes are attached to the cover, the brake drum stays attached to the tractor pinion shaft.
The 650 brakes could be slightly differant.
Removing the brake shoes and cover is easy and takes little time.

While the brake shoes and cover are removed, if the actuator arm is hard to turn, remove the brake shoe springs, knock out the shoes and punch the actuator arm/cam shaft out of the cover.
The cams sometimes get stuck from dirt/rust and need cleaned up.

Almost forgot if new brake lining is needed, hold on to your hat,If I remember right they are around 50 or $60 per shoe x 4 shoes /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
