JD 650 input needed

I've searched and read small tractor info for a few months now. JD's, Kubota, Greys, Power tracs, Yanmars, Isekis. I hate driving and the closest tractor, and the best price i think, is a JD 650 4x4 with 1200 hrs, FEL and ROP for $6900. I like the physical size of this tractor. Does that price sound fair? Paint looks OK, couple dings. Looks used but not abused. Haven't heard it run yet. What should I look for or listen for when I start it? Has turf tires. Rears seem very wide. I'd prefer Ag tires. Would chains on all 4 tires be a smart idea or would that put more stress on the gears if they hook on something?

I'll be using it for my lake property. 3 acres. Mostly brush cutting (I'll have to buy a 4' brush hog), 6" post holes, and spreading gravel and maybe pushing smaller trees down. Slope is 5 to 35 degrees, hence the chains on the turf tires. I've paid someone to knock down the big stuff and brush hog it once. Now just to maintain it.

Hmm. Guess this question asked to many times?
Well Reg, $6900 seems a little high. See if you can get them down to $6500.
As for the chains. Might work. Try not to spin them to much. May put to much strain on the gears. Other than that. good luck and enjoy your JD.

I sold my 650 3 years ago for $5500. That was my asking price, and I sold it in 3 days. My Dad and I bought it together for $6000 and kept it for 10 years. It was also 4wd with a 67 loader, and 4' rfm and box blade. It had about 950 hours it. It had turf front tires and terra rear tires. It did not have power steering. It was a heavy tractor for its size and seemed pretty stable on hills. JC

Welcome to TBN forums. I'm sorry nobody replied sooner, but you were asking for pretty specific information on a Sunday evening.

You say your slope is 5 to 35 degrees. I don't know where you got those numbers, but you probably don't want to operate your tractor on any 35 degree slopes you have. That's a 70% grade. They post major warning signs along the interstate if the grade of an exit ramp is 12%.

The price of that tractor seems reasonable as far as I can judge from your post. I can't tell you what to listen for when you run it beyond what you'll already be listening for. It should start pretty quickly (without a lot of cranking) and should run smoothly after a minute or two.

I've never used a 3PH post hole digger, but I've heard advice that anything less than 12" is not practical. I'll let more experienced others weigh in here.

Check your local tire shop to see how much it would cost to switch from turf to ag tires.

Thanks for the reply. Sorry for the sarcasm. I imagine you guys get tired of answering the same questions Over and Over again. I've been looking high and low for a decent priced tractor. They just don't seem to lose value. Base price for these under 20 hp tractors that are 10 to 30 years old are $4000 + with NO Equipment. Sure would like to grab a good deal, but the only one available right now is the JD 650, and from what I've read on previous post it may be priced a little high. Guess I'll just need to bite the bullet or wait for that great deal. I think I'll just go ahead and get the 650. Then I can stroke one more thing off my list.
