You will be happy with the 660. It is a real workhorse. It is heavy and you might find that it pushes your tractor along in hard dirt, but if you go slow and not too deep in one pass you should be OK. I use mine on an L3300.

GilaSlim,

I'd hold on to those parts too. :D

I doubt that you will wear it as fast as you think you might. I've had my 660 for over 10 years and still on the original tines using it on 10 ac nursery, so it gets used all year long.

JD discontinued buying their tillers from Howard years ago, the company that originally invented the tiller back around the turn of the last century. I'm not 100% sure if the Australian Howard company is still in business, and they may have been bought by a European company. But every tiller we've had made by Howard, and those that I know who have owned them, are very, very well built. I think you did great at that price.

They were sold under the Howard name as well as a few others, so there are other sources for parts outside of JD. Your right, the green paint is expensive.

The 660 I have is a green version of Howard's HR7. Here are some other places to look out of my files:

Our Products - Howard - HR7 Rotavator

Beaver Valley Supply Company - Howard Rotavators/Tillers

For the life of me I can't figure out why there is a replacement cover on the chain, plus another new cover. Looking at the second site you'll see why you got a great deal.

The day after I bought this beast, I decided to not run it until I got an owner's manual for it. So, I ran down to the JD dealer two miles from my house, and ordered manuals for the 660 and the 513 rotary cutter I had bought a month earlier ($400 and looked like it had only been used once, as the seller claimed). I wanted to go through the tiller manual's lube and maintenace sections, and make sure I knew how to mount and operate the thing.

The manuals finally arrived today, but were not gold-plated as I expected from their $43 each price tag...

I was concerned the 22 PTO HP on my Kubota might not handle the tiller very well. The manual lists seven different JD tractors for which JD recommends the 660 tiller. Two of them are listed on TractorData.Com as 22 PTO HP, while the largest of the bunch is only 35 PTO HP, though all are quite a bit heavier than the B7800. So I see you guys are right on - no problem for my tractor.

JFS2295, I checked out the two sites you posted. My 660 looks like the HR7-60HD and has the same specs. That model appears to have been replaced by the HR 300B-150E listed by Beaver Valley. Beaver still uses a photo of the HR7 in their ad.

Now all I need to do is change the oil in the gearbox and chain drive, grease all the zerks and give it a whirl.

Thanks to all!
