I have a JD 4120 on order, hope to get it in July. I bought my place a year ago and the previous owner left a JD660 tiller in the barn. I will check the gear case for grease but is there anything else to check on it before hooking it up? Could I damage the tractor if I try to run it and there is something wrong with it? This stuff is new to me so any advice is appreciated. Thanks

You might want to check to make sure the gearbox isn't locked up. Chances are it's ok, but it won't hurt to check & see:

Once you get the 660 tiller hooked up to your tractor, see if you can turn the pto input shaft by hand. Do this with the implement raised foot or so up off the ground, the pto lever disengaged, and the tractor engine off with park brake on. Note: Don't know what kind of tractor you have so you might need to try this before you hook up the PTO shaft to the tiller. If you can turn the input shaft backwards and forwards easily enough, then the gearbox and drive chain/gears on the tiller should be ok. You might want to see if there are any grease fittings that might need some grease, and maybe oil the chain if it has one.
It if all turns ok, hook it up and go play in the dirt!! :)
