OK, so I just bought a used Deere 660 tiller, I know its green, but the price was right, and it is in great shape. I sent away for the owners manual and service manual, but would like to get it up and running. Does anyone know what weight gear oil to use, how full to fill the gear box and the chain drive. Also, it looks like the drain plug on the chain drive isn't at the bottom and won't drain out completely. Any tricks to getting all the old oil out?

Many thanks for your help.

Hi J -

I had a JD 550 - a little smaller than your 660. I have a manual here if you need one since I no longer have the 550. It says to use 80/90 weight gear oil in the gear case. It holds approximately 13.5 ounces. If the oil in the case now shows no indication of water or milky substance, I wouldn't worry about the gear oil being contaminated. You could pull the front plate off the chain case to make sure it is clean. If you want the manual, you can e-mail me through the website.

Good luck.

I use a cheap manual pump oil extractor that I bought at Sears for $20. I don't have a tiller but it works great and no spills on my MMM.
