Definitely sounds like a short, but another thing to check, are you sure battery is connected properly? Negative should go to ground and positive to the starter. WIth the key turned off, the wire should not spark or get hot. If it does I suspect the key switch is defective.
Has the "negative to ground and "positive" to starter been confirmed? Don't read where it has.
