John Deere 755
My John Deere 755 starts up fine -- after about one minute, the rpm's drop (to almost a stall). I managed to limp back to the barn with minimal power.
Maybe it's not geting fuel? I changed the fuel filter this spring so that's probably not it.
Suggestions on where to start? fuel pump? ???

I look forward to your suggestions. Thanks

I'd start by making sure I replaced all of the fuel filters. I'm not familiar with you model, but someone who is can tell you if there's another filter - maybe near the tank?
Also, get a flashlight and look inside the tank for anything loose in there that could be plugging the line as it moves around. Someone else on TBN had that happen.
Have you replaced the air filter element or looked at it yet? Your engine may be starving for air.

Forgot to say WELCOME ABOARD!
Always good to count another nutmegger on the team.

Welcome to TBN. The first thing to try is make sure your fuel tank is full. These machines have a habit of losing the fuel pickup in the tank. Mine will "run out of fuel" at 1/2 tank. You can't see anything looking into the filler neck, though. If it runs fine with a full tank (after making sure the filter is full and the fuel system is bled) you may have a similar problem. One of these days I'll pull the pickup and fix it.

Also make sure your air filter is clean.

Check for good flow out of tank and that the tank vent isn't plugged.

If it is like the 855 with the tank behind the firewall, you can just remove the sender unit which is two wires, two hoses, and six screws. Lift it out, carefully twisting to get the float through the hole with no damage, it should have the fuel pickup, a screen on the end of a vinyl hose, that slides onto the metal tube. You can then see in the tank.

755 should have the tank in front of the radiator. Should still be able to remove the sender without having to remove the tank.

These three pages should provide some help.

I had an issue with fuel and just like JD755's manual says, you have to remove the front radiator bracket that connects to the radiator and holds the hood. I found it easier to remove the hood, the hinges and the radiator bracket as one piece. it's just the 2 bolts on each side on the lower radiator bracket and a couple bolts along the top edge of the radiator. It was a pain for me to get the hood back on by itself and exactly where it was before removal so it fit nicely on the instrument panel. remove the 2 nuts on the lower bracket in front of the tank, the lower tank bracket simply slides up and out, and tank comes out. keep the foam on each side unless you can get some new foam to keep tank snug between frame when you re-instal. I dumped out the fuel and found the remains of pickup line and screen and i believe the metal pickup on sender was not getting the fuel at the bottom of the tank and as a result, the fuel was pretty dirty, burning poorly, and messing up filters. here's a photo of the stuff that came out of the tank and a picture of how far the metal pickup reaches into the tank without the 1/4inch rubber fuel line connected.

damien.
