JD 790 2wd - 4 or 5 foot tiller?

jd790rf,
I have a JD 790 4WD and I'm in the market for a tiller. I like to know how the 5ft King Cutter tiller is working for you because I like to buy one. Because this thing is going overseas (farm in Africa) I need to be 100% sure it will fit. I contacted King Kutter and they say it will fit but I would appreciate your response. Thanks and good luck with your tiller.

Get wide enough to cover the footprint width of the tires, IMO. HP of the 790 may be marginal, but nothing wrong with making more than one pass to get the job done. The tiller is not like we are talking 1, 2, or 3 bottom plow that must do the job in one pass.

Now if you have Cat I 3 ph, and the king kutter is also Cat I, seems it would "fit".

That in itself wouldn't be my biggest concern if hauling a JD 790 off to Africa. Condition of the 790 and access to needed service would be, however. Enjoy the trip.
:welcome: to TBN

Thanks. The JD is already in Africa, thus I will only be shipping the tiller.

I have a 790 4X4 and wouldn't hesitate to run a 5' tiller but I don't know if the limitations are more power or traction. What tires do you have?

Same here, and I have 5ft KingKutter rototiller and think it's a great fit for the JD790. But, everyone has their own opinion!

Did anyone had to cut the Tiller PTO shaft to size to fit the JD790? In the Operator Manual, it says something about cutting the shaft to size if it's too long. Thanks.

You can cause some damage to the tractor PTO if the shaft is too long.
Mount the tiller without the PTO shaft, and measure the shortest distance when the tiller is raised and lowered, then determine if your PTO shaft is not longer than that shorter distance.
Of course, possibly it is too short and a longer one will be needed.

Now that I have had my tiller working very well the past few months I just want to say thanks to all for the good suggestions.
