Oil & Fuel JD 790 cranking but not starting

Check to make sure the fuel shutoff was not turned to the off position months ago. I never turn the fuel off but did one fall after changing the fuel filter and did not turn it back on. Very had to start with the fuel shut off.

Glad it worked...

When ever troubleshooting, always try the least invasive things first (meaning don't disassemble anything until you have exhausted all other possibilities).

If it sat for six months, what are the chances are your battery is down a bit? Diesels need to crank over enthusiastically to start.... If the battery is a bit low it will still crank but never start. Does smoke come out of the exhaust when you crank it? Another indication it is trying to fire but not spinning fast enough.

he said no smoke.. if it's turning over and not smoking.. it's starved for fuel for some reason.. OR it has no compression.. like stuck open valves.. etc..

Okay, now I do have a mystery on my hands. Today, I finally got back to look at it again. Tried to turn it over a couple times (confirmed that the solenoid is definitely retracting). Nothing, then, opened the fuel tank just to take a peak in there and turned the key again. That time it definitely tried to start. I let it sit for 30 seconds and tried again and it fired right up! Used it for about an hour. Parked it. Waited a couple hours then started it up again and parked it back in my shop.... Behaving totally normal now. Any thoughts?

tank make a huge sucking sound when you opened it by any chance?

Fuel tank vent blocked...is that in the tank filler cap? (had a 790, but can't recall)

Did not really notice any sucking noises (may have been a slight amount of air displaced...). Yes, my first thought is that a vent on the tank might be blocked. I will check it out tomorrow, I dont think it is in the cap.
