Just bought this 790,,decided I would change the fuel filter,,went to auto parts store and got a paper filter cartridge, when i removed the old filter it is completely different,,it has a plastic filter with a round screen,,has a stem that goes down to the bottom of the bowl,,it is working as there was a lot crud in filter portion,,wonder if someone changed the factory set up to this or is this correct,,I washed it all out with a water hose and reinstalled

Try cleaning your old filter with diesel. Make sure no water remains in the housing. Reinstall old filter. Check with John Deere dealer about what is the proper filter.

JD used two different filters on the 790 depending on serial number. S/N -790000 used the paper filter #7 (M801101). S/N 790001- used the plastic strainer #18 (M811032). With the plastic strainer there is usually no need to replace it unless it is damaged. You can just clean it with some diesel fuel.

A water hose?

That's no problem. It's just a plastic screen. As long as it was dried off before re-installing. :)
