I am looking at buying a really nice JD790 that is 4 yrs old but has only 34 hrs!! R1's, 300 loader, It is cosmetically still new.....but what should I be worried about? for instance ....have the piston rings seated?....any issues with the break in oil still in motor? No warranty left of course. It has been in a shed the whole time. Asking price is coming down each week but currently at $14500 with a Big Tex trailer. I would offer less....what would be a fair price to both of us? JD dealer said it is too high of asking price as a 3005 is only about $16000.

Appreciate any advice offered......Terry

As always with looking at high priced used, it is up against new, with warranty and zero financing. I wouldn't worry too much about the current fluids. If you did get it, I'm guessing you are fussy enough to change out the fluids, included radiator, pretty darn quick.

I might go to TractorHouse and see what the 790s with say, 500 hours are going for, just to get in the ballpark. Remember though, rarely, rarely do TractorHouse tractors "close" for the price they are asking. Deduct 5-10%.

BTW, you've heard it run? Everything checks out?

5 years down the road, figure the re-sale value as well, if you care. It isn't getting any newer.

I just gave $11,500 for a 2004 790, 4WD, R-4 tires, w/300 loader & 5' Woods finish mower in the Midwest ( less than 2 weeks ago). Tractor is in very good condition with 383 hours.

I tried to sell a 770 (like new, low hours) years ago and had a **** of a time getting my money out! Had one deposite and then a friend of his put the bug in his ear about hydros! Gave the guy his money back!

790? Great solid tractor, but what about the hydros? Gear trannys are very outdated in my opinion for anything requiring maneuvering and precise control. I had a front mount blower (the ONLY way to blow) but the gears didn't always afford a proper speed! In reverse, it would be almost impossible! One way to fast, the other, way too slow!

Seems to me you first need to deduct the value of that Big Tex trailer to get a remaining tractor / loader price. So...if that Big Tex is worth say $1500....now your down to $13,000 for the tractor/loader price (PROVIDED YOU WANT THE TRAILER...or can sell the trailer for that price). IMO....if you can cut another 10% or so....your in the ball game.

Mine had a few more hours (300) and is a little older (2001)...but I paid $10 k for it a 1 1/2 years ago. As said....new ones can be had for 16 (or less)...and they have a warranty. I wouldn't worry about the fluids....just change engine oil and you'll be fine.

Depends on your needs! I will be using mine at the farm for various mowing, blading, logging, etc.. I'm old school on the rear tire size, the JD hydros have a lower tire height & are usually turfs, thus not meeting my needs (replacing the tires is expensive)!

Also the hydro will use up a few HP, so you would need to go with a size bigger tractor! Hydros are very nice & have there place too, just depends on your needs! ~~ grnspot110

Thanks to everyone for all the great advice. I will be going to test drive it tomorrow. I don't need the trailer so will negotiate that away. I don't mind gear tractors as all my other Deere's and Masseys are gear tractors.....I have 6 between our two farms. This one would be our smallest for use around the home/garden/horse barn. I like my tractors simple as possible, but very reliable so the 790 is a good fit for me. Besides a hydro would just confuse my feet. I suppose a 3005 would be the wiser choice as I'd get a warranty......but maybe like Toyota's (at least they used to be) I wouldn't need any warranty work on the well built Yanmar machine. The local JD dealer is working up a price for me on a 3005 so I can compare.

Again thanks to all........

I have great respect for the Japanese and Japanese Diesels in particular. That yanmar in my 770 never missed a beat!

I too was influenced by the tire size on that tractor, although I went with turf tires, which wern't worth much for traction when filled with mud!

Two other things I can say against the tractor. One, getting on and off was a pain! And two, I missed not having remotes out the back.
