JD 820

I have a friend that was given a JD 820 2wd tractor (by his grandmother). Anyone have any info on this? Years made, HP, weight, etc? Seems to be a real workhorse...very heavy.

If this is the late-50's 820 were talking about, yer right, it's VERY heavy. It was the largest, most powerful 2 cylinder diesel John Deere ever made. It evolved from the 80, through the 820 to the 830 which was the last one before JD gave up on 2-lungers.

I'd LOVE to have an 820 or 830, preferably pony-start. The starting procedure on those beasts just fascinates the heck out of me.

Problem is, I'd have to buy a new truck and trailer to haul it, and there wouldn't be room to turn it around on my little patch.

There were actually two different 820 two cyl's made. The first had a green dash and was pretty much the same as the predecessor- the 80 -, and the second had a black dash, which evolved into the 830. I think the biggest differences were the head and injectors. Also there were some refinements to the PTO clutch. I owned both an 80 pony start and an 830 electric start. wasn't really a noticeable difference in power or weight- they were pretty much the same. If my memory serves me correctly, JD listed them at 78 PTO hp., and they weighed about 8200lb. with out added weight. If you want to see actual specs check out www.tractortips.com. I don't think they differentiate between the two different versions of the 820 though. You might have to go to some JD archives for that info.
