I was brush hogging last weekend and noticed a bit of oil leaking from the king pin area of the front axle.

I wiped it clean so I could see exactly where it was leaking from.

When I was finished, I checked and found no more leaking.
Then checked the 90w dipstick on the axle and found no oil on it?:eek:

Questions;

How much oil does the front diff take on a JD 855 4wd?

Is there a recommended oil for the front axle? ??w 90
I also use the tractor in the dead of winter to shovel snow.

Thanks, I can't find my owners manual.

I would be very cautious until....

Being that you have no reading on the dipstick, the reason it stopped leaking could be because you are entirely out of oil....

Sorry, can't help you with the oil specs for your 855 - hopefully someone will chime in shortly with an answer.

In the meantime, I wouldn't turn a wheel.

The front axle on my 755 is identical to the one on your 855. I use API GL-5 Gear Oil, SAE 80W-90. It's pretty standard stuff and is what John Deere recommends. The 755/855 use 2.25 quarts. Be sure to remove the vent plugs on both sides of the axle when adding oil, and replace them after seeing the proper level on the dipstick.
