Price Check JD 855 w/mower Opinions? Price?

Hi Everyone.
i have been searching for a compact tractor to use around a small farmette I bought last year (15 acres) I plan to have some livestock next year and really am planning to be ahead of the game a little. I don't want to shell out the cash for a new one.

I ran across a Deere 855 with a belly mower at a dealer the other day. It is in overall good shape I would say. i didn't drive it yet but I will. They are asking $4995. The price seemed OK to me really. the belly mower needs some help and there is a crack in the hood. it has 850 hours on the meter. I am told it runs great with no known issues.

I would like to eventually buy a FEL and a brush hog, possibly a front blade as well, for use with it. can anyone comment on how these machines are reliable wise and if the price is OK.

Also anything I need to look at to check out on the used machine. I will TRY upload some pictures after this post.

For a tractor, you should be fine. If you want a FEL then I'd get it in a package deal. Much better economics. Adding a FEL could be expensive, unless you get a good deal on eBay or are lucky finding one sitting unattached. But unattached FEL's are rare, I believe.

I talked with the dealer again today. As mentioned i haven't driven it.

He told me there is a small creep in it when at idle. He felt it could be adjusted.

As well as he said you have to play with the pedals (forward and reverse) to get it to start. He said there is a safety switch there. So he felt the pedals needed adjusted.

Can anyone comment on that? Other than those things he said no issues he knows of or could easily identify.

The creep and starting problem could definitely be related. The pedals must be a the neutral position for the engine to crank over.

Is it 4WD? It looks to be based on the lever with the red knob on the left side. The price sounds good if everything is OK mechanically. Does the dealer have any history on it? No way to really tell if the hours are accurate. The Tach could have been replaced. The JD 55 series are great tractors.

It is 4x4 yes. Has the 4 way hydro valve.

The dealer said it was used on a boat dock to mow the dry dock as well as pull boats in and out of the water to dock. He didn't believe it was used hard but couldn't say for 100% sure.

I have a 855 with 700+ hours runs great,it does creep when

As mentioned, the 55 series were some of the best tractors manufactured by Deere. The only thing you will have to remember is the age.
