JD 950 - is there a Yanmar Equivalent?

   / JD 950 - is there a Yanmar Equivalent? #11
Carey, I wrote that page back around 2004 after nobody could tell me anything about the YM240 I bought. As I learned stuff, I added it into that explanation.

I intended to say YM240 was sold here independently by Yanmar before Deere (highlighted again?) negotiated the contract to get Yanmar as their supplier.

I like to think that YM240 spooked Deere. As soon as they saw it and tested it they immediately recognized they had been outclassed. :D
Ok, that's how urban legends get started. Somebody has to make them up in the first place. :D:D:D

Had a good chuckle when I opened it up and seen it. :D

Good info -

Glad to hear this is mostly Yanmar....I sure looks like a lot like my 2020D....And I AM KEEPING MY YANMAR!!!!!:laughing::laughing:

I got this one because it was such a deal....could not resist. I will get this old gal fired up and running again and then sell her and the JD 906 bush hog it came with.

Here is my question....which I posted in the JD section too. The tractor was well maintained for the first 25 years of its life, but the last 5 years the 2nd owner didn't use it at all and left it outside. He said the last time he ran it the brakes were shot and with less than 500 hours I don't believe that. He opened the left side brake access area and he said there was oil in there. The brakes are mushy and do not hold and I have not tried to adjust them yet, but the oil concerns me and when I checked the hydraulic fluid it was empty on the dip stick.

So my questions is...do I refill? Is there an oil/axle seal in there that probably dried up and leaked? - Hard job? I haven't crawled under this yet, but so far I have not see where the hydraulic fluid would have leaked out???

These arent wet brakes are they? The low fluid level means maybe that the brakes are not filled enough. and that maybe they just need to be adjusted? Got no idea, im kind of thinking there not meant to be wet though as most yanmars are not wet.

This thread says it has dry brakes, so if the brakes have any oil on them it is reasonable that leaning hydraulic fluid could be the culprit. Are both sides bad? I'm assuming these have a mechanical linkage, not hydraulically operated brakes.

I would figure out the leak situation first. Put some fluid in it, a catch pan underneath on a tarp or drop cloth, and see what is leaking where.

Congrats on your purchase!

One issue I didn't address to well was the product support I'm seeing with the YM3000 VS the JD 950. We that have been here for awhile have seen threads where parts for these
"Gray Market" tractors are harder to find than products originaly intended for the U.S. market. Hoye does at least as good a job supporting YM grays as JD does for it's Yanmar made products, sometimes I think better. Now I'm sure if you had a new JD 3320, the parts would be right there. A little different for a 1984 JD 950. A few parts for the 950 I've been told are not available. ( at any price ) I've never got that answer from Hoye on any part I've requested for my YM 3000. ( important to note that no other major parts have been needed other than what one would call service parts ) This spring after the clean up and repair session, the 950 goes up for sale. 950 is a great tractor, just wondr how long it will be supported. It could have had a harder life in service, but the YM is a 1977, the JD is a 1984 ??? I don't think anyone outside the factory in Japan has the factory part interchange manual, sure they don't want it in the public domain. Think anyone that could get a copy of this would have a gold mine in information.

Chris, I don't know about Hoye. but, I know that Fredricks (at 1 time ) had some older JD parts. You may want to visit their site or call. My 3110D is also supppse to be the sister/brother to the JD 950.

I have them bookmarked as well. If your 3110D has a turbo, it could be closer to a JD 1050. Same engine as a 950, just added a turbo. Just about to split the 950 and change the gear cluster that has 3rd gear. Once I get a parts list will give them a call as well.
To the OP, the breaks in the 950 are listed in eBay as fitting the YM 2500,3000,3110 as well, same part. Just put a set on my 3000, case was dry when opened, you might have a bad seal.
