JD 955 No Start

Hi guys,

Could use some help:

We have a JD 955. Today it was shut down and then would not start, like the battery was completely dead. We got it started with a jump and ran for a few hours, then the same thing happened.

I tested the battery with a multimeter and it looks good with a reading over 12v. But I still cant get the starter to engage without jumping. Any thoughts?

Battery cables? This happened to neon my 955. The positive cable looked good but it was rotted inside. Good luck

How old is the battery? When I've taken batteries in for testing they do a load test. My guess is you need a new one. Take it out and have it tested though to see.

Turn the key to start and shake the cable around. That's how I found out mine was bad

Battery is about 2 years old.

That battery should be more like 12.6V after running for a few hours. Unfortunately, as already noted, without a load test, you can't really know for sure if it's good.

Jiggle the battery cable and have someone else turn the key. If it turns over replace the the hot battery cable .same thing happened to me. Opened up the battery and found that it was all corroded.

Poor man's load test. Take the multimeter and check between the big post on the starter and ground. Should be battery voltage. Now hit the starter. Does it drop to nearly nothing? If so, do the same checking at the battery. If it drops a lot, then bad battery. If not, check connections or cable.
