JD 990 vs. Kubota L4300

Please let me preface this by stating that I don't want this to turn into an HST/GST debate.

I recently bought a very nice used Kubota B2710, and while I really like the HST for a lot of things, it's just not quite enough tractor for me. The local dealer tells me he wouldn't use it to pull a single subsoiler through the ground here, and I'm looking to use this tractor commercially. I plan to do some brush mowing, scraper work, fencing, light loader, and hoe work. (And no, I wasn't planning on going into business when I bought this tractor... but you wouldn't believe how popular I've become in the district since that little machine popped up in my yard. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif There are a lot of acerage owners out here who need work done and are willing to hire it out.)

I've narrowed my choices down to either the JD 990 or Kuboata L4300. I can get the 990 for about $4,000 CDN less than the Kubota if I'm willing to drive a couple of days to do it. (And I am)

On paper, these two units look pretty evenly matched but there's always a difference between looking at the page and looking over the hood. I'd really appreciate any feedback on either of these models.

I'm sure you've probably seen this, but just in case you haven't, here's a head-to-head comparison of the two tractors specifications. Keep in mind that it's from the Kubota website. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

It looks like the Kubota has the edge in HP, alternator and 3PH lift, and the JD comes out ahead on gpm hydr flow, gearing and weight. Like you said, pretty comparable tractors.

That being said, I'm surprised at the price difference up there. Here in Texas, either unit, in 4wd with FEL, could be bought for around $18k US or a little more.

Things to bear in mind on hydraulic flow. The total flow is usually the combination of power steering and implement since separate pumps are used for both. A higher pump pressure will help out on everything from from loader lift to power steering. More flow to a power steering assembly may or may not. Biggest advantage I see for the Kubota is the mechanical shuttle and apparently more leg room. It comes down to how much is that worth to you.
