JD Battery short life

There are more flukes out there than one would wish for. The battery gave out on my New 2520 within 6 months of getting it. It was replaced through warranty, but I was still dissappointed.

All I can say is heat kills batteries down here. I have never ever had a battery last more than three years. If one lasted 12 years down here, nobody would believe you.

My JD stock battery was a maintenance free, where my Les Schwab has caps so you can check the level. Going back to my last JD mower where the stock battery lasted 12 years. I never had a tender on it and it typically sat in my shed from October until March or April with out running. And for 12 years it always fired up in the spring. I am just thinking that the batteries that they put in the new mowers these days are built cheaper and just enough life to get the mower sold and make it through that first year. As mentioned before it could have be the odd battery or fluke, but when the JD dealer service dept tells me that 2 years is a typical life and that is what is to be expected, I feel that he is seeing many batteries such as mine that gave up the ghost early. I have heard complaints about the batteries in the CUT's as well and am expecting to replace mine in the 2520 early as well. I have a tender on that one so maybe it will last a little longer. Going to pick up a couple more tenders this week for both of my mowers. Hopefully it's not too late for my other one. Thanks to all for your comments and help. Les Schwab brand. 230 CCA vs 195 for the stock.

That is still a scrawny little battery. Lawn batteries around here are the same case size but.......they have 340 CCA . That is CCA not CA. 405 minutes reserve capacity.

A bit better than stock yet not great. I could have bought one with that amount of CCA but they wanted $60 vs $35. Tried to keep it reasonable.

25$ spread over 3-4 years of battery service is going to break the bank? I find if all other factors the same. A higher CAA and reserve capacity battery last long than a minimum sized battery

My JD battery also did not last long. But I attributed it to the continuous drain by the computer. Therefore, if the tractor sits for extended period of time (during winter), it drains down and as we all know, leaving a battery even slightly discharged for an extended period of time does it in.

Temperature ,operator's habits, alternator size, electrical loads and vibration all play a part. High temps above 77F rapidly shorten lead-acid battery life. Short duty cycle operation at part throttle will rapidly beat a battery to death. A lead acid battery that is chronically undercharged will rapidly fail. Leaving a switch on and deep discharging a battery even once ruins the plate surfaces.

YOU ARE 100% CORRECT !!!!

I bought a Deep Cycle Marine Battery about 6 Months ago. I use it on a Solar Charger for my Garage. Because we are in Winter Months, my lights drain the Battery faster that it was able to Charge... Since that happened, now the Battery stinks .

It was my fault to drain the Battery below 9V although it was a Deep Cycle and suppose to be better than Lead. But since the Voltage was so LOW, now I think it's ruined. People said you are NOT supposed to drain your battery below 10.5V

My battery in my 6420 lasted for 7 years. I replaced it last year. Clean up those battery terminals and spray some CRC Battery Terminal Protector stuff on them! :thumbsup:

My JD battery had a dead short after 13 months. The tractor gets used about every 3 weeks except December thru March. In the winter it was only used a few days.

My son worked for a John Deere dealer, about 10 years, down here in Florida. He often mentioned the high failure rate of JD batteries.
