I have a JD 4720 compact tractor. I am currently using a 6' Howse cutter to mow my 35 acreas of pasture land. I would like to upgrade to a JD MX7 rottery cutter but my dealer is telling me that JD does not reccommend this cutter for my tractor due to length of cutter and weight. JD recommends a MX8 semi-mount model. Does anyone use a MX7 with a JD 4720 and if so do you have any problems. My pasture has a couple of gently rolling hills with a few ditches that I have usually mowed with my Howse cutter. Any thoughts? The price I have been quoted is $5100 for the MX8.

Your dealer is giving you good advice! There are posts hereabouts on TBN across multiple forums regarding 7' rotary cutters! Basically, they are considerably longer than an 8' mower and the initial blade startup for those long blades is harder on the tractor's pto clutch.

So, maneuvering thru gates and turning near fence lines as well as stability in the field and road safety make the 8' cutter a better choice.

(Is that a semi-mount price? That's a good price - if it is!)

I will 2nd that. I have an MX-6 on my 4720, and would not want a single blade mower any larger. Power will not be an issue with the 8 footer, and the 2 blade design will give you a better cut. I think that price is a good one.

What yo need is a few cows, that's too much to mow. Let a rancher use it to graze.

There are about 30 brood cows on the pasture. I mow the tall fescue down so they can get to the good grass.
