John Deere 2305 (2010)
I’m at a loss on this little guy D-100. My wife won’t let me mow the front with the JD2305 anymore. I’ve had the D100 about 5 years. 33 hours on it. Hasn’t run for two years. Jumped the battery off I went. 30 min later I opened hood. Noticed oil coming out the fuel vent. Research showed blown head gasket. I put new carb on, new fuel pump, new battery, new head gasket. Let set over night. Started up. Ran 15 min. Started blowing white smoke. Ordered new head gasket. Changed it again. Nothing wrong with #2. But changed anyways. Set overnight. 15 min of mowing. White smoke. Enough you can’t see to drive then motor stalls. Anyone have an idea what it could be ? Thanks in advance. Bill

I had a car that kept blowing head gaskets and found out the head bolts were torqed down but there was debris in the holes so boltd weren't actually tight to the head. Just my thought.

Thanks for that. I’ll try yet gasket 4 and check the holes. Appreciate it, wouldn’t have thought of that one. Thanks

You said "nothing wrong with #2". So the head gasket was ok?

Maybe valves and/or rings?

Both head gaskets were perfect. It didn’t blow smoke till I changed the gasket. But, oil coming from fuel pump screen lead me to do so. I set the piston on compression stroke then rotated till piston 1/4 pass. Set clearance 3000 top, 4000 bottom. Started an ran perfect. After 15 min. White smoke then slugged down an wouldn’t run. Will do the same after it’s cool. Run perfect. Then once warm. Same. Changed head gasket again. Looked great. But changed. Still does the same thing. I’m wondering if valves are set wrong an causing it. Appreciate any advise.
Side note: again. 33 hours on it. Cylinder walls are polished smooth an not a singe scratch. Bill

Update…

It’s fixed. Want to share if anyone else runs into this…

Started out oil from screen on fuel pump. Replaced pump. Still happened. Changed head gasket. Started smoking. Changed head gasket again. Still smoked. But strong smell of gas in oil an overfilled. Changed oil. Ran great for 15 min. New carb, new fuel pump and oil n filter change. Runs perfect.
So, I Truly believe I had a bad head gasket the first time. But old gas an stuck needle in carb = oil in gas. Changing oil didn’t help because carb still overflowing.
Head gasket $10
Fuel pump $10
Carb $30.
Oil n filter change ? Had on hand

If this happens. Would recommend just changing it all :).

For a $1400 mower with low hours, worth throwing $100 into it.

Hope this helps the next person. Internet leads to head gasket. Check oil level an smell first. Good luck.
