I've got a 12 year-old JD 275 with the 17HP Kawasaki engine. It's a great tractor and has been totally reliable.

This year, after storage in my outdoor shed over the Winter, it started perfectly but ran for just 60 seconds. Then it stopped and I can't get it started. I suspect stale gas or a possibly a gummy carburetor. Not sure if I put in any gas conditioner last Fall. I usually do.

I've looked online for specific instructions and the info I've found says "look in your manual". I have, but my manual doesn't say how to drain the tank, drain the fuel lines, clean the carburetor, etc.

Where can I get this info?
Am I on the right track?

Have you tried maybe pulling the air filter and putting a little gas in manually
abd fireing it up??? you might try that a few times see if maybe it will take off and keep running maybe the fuel pump is dry from sitting??

Had that problem with my JD 345 (Kawasaki 20HP liquid cooled). It would start but wouldn't keep running after 10 minutes or so. After replacing the time delay module, rebuilding then later replacing the carb, it ended up being the ignition module. I think it's the same as your 275 and is a common $220 problem.

Hope that it's just a clogged fuel filter. BTW, there is a fuel shut-off valve on the carb, has a single electrical wire attached. On mine, I could here it click when I disconnected and reconnected the wire (with the ign ON). Something else to check.

Thanks everybody with the ideas/assistance so far!

- I will try a little gas in carb manually to see that that helps.

- I have not seen the JD parts catalog - so that is very helpful.

- I will definitely check the fuel cut-off valve as well.

It might take me another day until I have the time to work on the tractor, but I'll report back. I plan on getting over to my local JD store tomorrow AM for a tune-up kit and I expect to ask about any ideas they may have to get me going.

Thanks again for your help!

OK, got an update...

I trickled some gas down into the carburetor and the engine starts right up - for about 10 seconds. Did it 3 times just to see if a little suction might pull the fuel past wherever it might be clogged. So now I can see that it's a fuel issue.

I'd imagine that the next steps might be:
- Drain the gas tank of any stale gas.
- Replace the fuel filter.
- Pull the bowl off the bottom of the carburetor and somehow clean something in there (I am guessing here!)
- Put fresh gas in tank
- Start 'er up

Is this close? Are there any instructions that detail exactly how to proceed to resolve this issue?

Thanks for your ongoing assistance!

Sounds like your going about just fine try what you have outlined and hopefully it will fire right up!!

Thanks!

Actually, I have little idea how to take the carb bowl off and what there is to clean once I am in there. I was just guessing! Any assistance on this front would be greatly appreciated!

Here's what I've learned, sort of a "trick" from another thead - am I on the right track? After siphoning out any stale gas and replacing with fresh fuel:

- Disconnect that looks like a cut-off solenoid on the bottom of the carb.
- Remove the bolt holding the bowl on.
- Inspect/clean out the bowl and clean any parts/jets that I can find without further assembly. Use "Seafoam" and compressed air.
- Put "Seafoam" in the bowl and reinstall bowl and solenoid.
- Put some "Seafoam" down into the carb after removing the air filter.
- Wait a few.
- Crank it and see if it starts.

This seems like the least intrusive approach that doesn't include complete disassembly of the carb. Will it work?

If it was me I would replace the fuel filter and put new gas in a nd try it you can always take the bowl off if this doesn't work...but it may fire and save the hassle of messing with the carb at all!!???
