I don't see this ever affecting the current crop of export tractors to the US in anyway.

BJR, I agree that the article doesn't clearly indicate JD will import their chinese tractors into the states, but when I read between the lines, an acquisition like this tells me they want to compete in that market. It wouldn't surprise me that Jinma, Foton, or whatever sales have taken potential revenue from JD to the point where they have to get into the market, or cede it to their competitors.

I'm conserned that any Americanizing will just take away from the simplicity of these current Jinma tractors AKA more bells and whistles and Fit'N'Finish stuff, see also, higher prices. bjr

That's a good point, and one can only hope that JD recognizes the value many buyers place in the simplicity of these machines. They would be wise to develop along two lines, one that preserves the fundamentals with no frills, and another that begins to add the bells and whistles that many customers do look for. Customer choice, ain't that what it's all about?

For better or worse, I expect the machines that replace the 790 and 990 to be chinese.

I would never buy a Chinese tractor. There junk just like the rest of the stuff that they make.

I have no problem with JD making tractors in China. Chances are the machines will not even be sold in the US market due to environmental issues associated with it (emissions regs, etc). They can still skate by with less refined fuel there, and less emissions standards to deal with. Not to mention the tractor market is probably huge there.

There are many companies that have production facilities for similar devices on more than one continent. Saves them a bunch in shipping, and in many cases it saves on labor as well, since they employ mostly workers from those areas and pay significantly less than they would here. It helps the company more easily compete in those markets also since they can keep the cost of their product down.

From what I can see around these parts you must have to be over 65 to buy a Buick.

Yeah, that's an image they're trying to correct. Did you ever hear of a Grand National or a GNX?

We actually bought a LaCrosse -- demo with 5k miles -- after looking at a number of used cars in the area including a Saab 9000 Aero, a 900 turbo, an Altima, a Focus, a Forester, and a few others. That's a pretty wide spectrum of the automotive market, I know. The Buick seemed like the best deal. Like buying a tractor, the dealership was a major factor in the deal.

The car is surprizingly good at doing car things. The only thing I found off-putting when shopping was the lethargy built into the controls. Even opening the trunk means holding the button down for about a second instead of getting an instant response. Once you get used to the fact that everything works with a bit of lag, the car works very well. A trip out west this summer saw us rolling down a dirt road in North Dakota at 70+ with the thing feeling perfectly stable and content, even over humpbacked intersections.

BTW, the Buick is now the wife's car. My daily driver is a '98 Passat with 135K on the clock and assorted electrical gremlins that come and go just to keep me from boredom.

China is a major market for Buick products, too. They may well sell more cars there than they do here. It's a major enough player in the Chinese market that they have models we can't get here, sometimes further upmarket.

We need more U.S. to China sales to get some of our money back!

I was in Beijing in January and it seems that every 4th car is a Buick. I was surprised.

BTW, when in China, I saw cheap junk and also good stuff. A lot of product imported into the USA is the cheapest that China makes...and not much good. If you want the better product, the price goes up some.

I always thought JD made decent stuff.......it's sad to hear this news :( but then again......China does make some decent quality stuff.......so hopefully this won't affect JD's quality :)
