JD mulching kits, are they worth the bucks?

I had the mulching kit on my 54. Hated it. Have to cut to often. I took the shoot cover off and changed blades. Left the rest on it. Works good now and I don't have to rake or bag.

Had the kit on x740 w/54c for 6 years, mowing 3 acres. Was a little concerned with being made totally of plastic, but little to no wear to date. Wanted to try the mulch kit to see if it helped with the stuff being sucked up to the operators area to the radiator! Seems to have helped that area and not as "dirty" mowing, etc. Pros=good cut with no wind rowing or bagging, less cleanup, mow in either direction because of no side discharge, mulches leaves. Cons= Frequent under deck clean outs, can't let grass get too tall (1/3 grass height). Removal not too bad but only do maybe once a year, couple wing nuts and a wrench for clip on outside deck edge. I am blessed to have a lift in my shop, so clean out under deck not a big deal, other than time/effort. I have gone to mulch blades only whether kit is installed or not, you CAN'T use regular blade with kit! BTDT I guess I like it because it's on 95% of the time. Only times I've had to remove is during spring when rains were coming often enough to tighten mowing window plus turf growing like crazy. EASY ON THE FERTILIZER!

Ok I bought and installed the mulching kit. Tried it today and was very impressed. Grass actually disappears. I'm not concerned about what the other posters said about having to mow at a slower speed and mowing more often. I already mow at a moderate speed, and as far as mowing more often, well as far as I'm concerned, I can't wait for the grass to grow. I love mowing the lawn, it is very relaxing to me. I always thought I should do it as a side job, but I guess that would take the enjoyment out of it.

I went into the dealer looking to purchase a 7 iron deck. I heard that they have a much higher blade speed giving you a finer cut. Plus I love the drive over feature. The dealer wasn't able to find the deck speed on my 62C, but what he did find was that it didn't fit my X595. Very disappointing. So I bought the mulching kit. Thanks everyone.

Carl,
Man that is the important thing, if you are happy with the results then all is good.

I mowed my lawn while the grass was still wet, so I removed my deck with the mutch kit installed. This was the first time I removed the deck on my x720 and was surprised how easy it was. Only problem is, the deck is heavy. I found that the mulch kit is super easy to remove and reinstall. It does protect some of the bottom of the deck and even though it is plastic, it is heavy plastic. The kit works great and doesn't leave chippings that I can see. I have lots of sand that love to eat the blades but my mulching blades were good as new. By the way, when the manual suggests that you wear gloves when handling the blades, it is a great idea.

Has anyone tried mulching blades with the power blower/bagger system attached?

Has anyone tried just putting mulching blades and making a tin plug for the deck? It sounds hillbilly, but I did it many moons ago on a cheap mtd non mulching walk behind mower decks, I got pretty good results. Thats when I lived in the city.

I was thinking the same thing and am looking for people who have tried that. I will regurgitate this and maybe someone will have an idea about just putting a plate on the chute before I actually mess around a lot trying it.

I have an x540 with mulching kit & was dissapointed in what the "kit" consisted of when it'd been fitted. I used to run a billygoat 33" pedestrian mower that had a simple blanking plate to convert to it from a side discharge to mulching, and it worked great!
I'd Go with the tin sheet option!

On my cheapo LA145 with 48" deck, the JD mulching adapter included is just a molded plastic blanking plate that has two bungee cords with hooks to hold it in place. It's well made: rounded to the deck shape, fits above and inside the deck's flared bottom, has heavy duty rubber bungees and mounting hardware.

I just used this last week on 1/2 acre yard and noticed that the grass and leaves were mulched up into a fine particle size. It does take a couple of slow passes to get full mulching accomplished, and the deck needs to be down low at around 2" so the leaves and grass don't escape the deck before being chopped. However, this simple feature along with the combo JD blades work very well on my leaves. The only places I rake leaves is out of flower beds and tight spots where I can't go with the mower. My wife even commented on how nice our yard looked when I finished.

Good Evenin Jim,
Its allways good to keep the wifey happy !

To add something too this thread, I have the mulching kit on my C-125 Wheel Horse and it works great, it really chops the leaves up into very small pieces ! Worth the money IMO...
