When I purchased my 4100 from JD they offered an insurance policy that was very reasonable priced. At least I thought.

It appears that the only way to get the JD insc. is to finance the unit though them which I did not do. Therefore, my dealer says that I cannnot utilize or buy the JD insurance program.

Instead of looking for an anti-theft system maybe you should be looking for a different insurance company? When I called my agent at State Farm re insuring JD4300, he said it was covered by my home owners policy so another policy or premium increase weren't necessary. He didn't say anything about an anti-theft system.

GVW,

Been There Done This and still want a better answer about Tractor Security.

The dealer is right about the JD insurance. Its only available with a JD loan.

My home owners policy was a bit iffy on tractor protection. I read the policy and I could see them covering the tractor. I could see them denying coverage as well. I talked to them and eventually the SAID that the tractor would be covered. I would want that it writing. For roughly $10 a month I went with the JD insurance since I financed through them. At some point I'm going to refinance the loan and I'll have to get the insurance coverage in writing.

Since my tractor is alone I'm worried about theft. But there is only one way in to my property and it not easily accessible. I also don't leave the tractor where it can be seen from the road. There are very few people that even know that the tractor is there. I intended on keeping it that way. Course I just told everyone on TBN!

If they don't know its there they can't steal it is my mantra. I had the option of leaving the tractor at the neighbors but then the tractor would be in view. I figure I have it in the safest place I can get. I'm actually thinking about moving the tractor to a new location on the property to be even more paranoid.

I like the idea of a kill switch. I thought the fuel cutoff valve would prevent the engine from being started. It does not, so there went one of my little tricks to try to protect the tractor. I'm more worried about teenagers getting on the property for a party and then finding the tractor than I am about theft.

I keep the tractor locked up with a chain and lock. Teenages would not likely be able to cut the chain/lock and even if they got the tractor started and moveable they would not be able to go anywhere because of the chain. The chain is around a tree so it ain't going anywhere....

Hope this helps...
Dan

It won't help much once the field catches on fire, but since you should see it start, it will stop it then. It will also put out any tractor fires (not that big a concern with a diesel). As you said, you don't need a big one, just a 2.5 lb model, I wouldn't get one of the smaller toy ones. Also I'd make sure the 2.5 lb unit has a metal valve and a metal bracket, since it will be mounted in an exposed location.

Last year when I bought my 5210 the dealer gave me 2 keys. My wife had to go back to the dealer to sign some papers so I asked her to get them to make some more keys. She said they just handed her some keys, they did not cut them. So I assumed that all JD keys were the same for the 5210. When my neighbor was grading off a place for my barn/house my son tried my 5210 key in the JD dozier. It worked! My other son worked for a company that had some JD heavy equipment. When he left the company for another job he forgot to give them his key. He gave the key to me and I tried it on my 5210 and it worked. My conclusion is that there is only 1 key for JD tractors and heavy equipment. The JD compacts and garden tractors/mowers may have a differnent key, I have not had an opportunity to try my key in one of them. So if any of you think that just removing the key is any kind of theft/safety security you may want to try another method. I do not know if this is true for other brands but it probably is. Knowing this, I guess I should heed my on warning and install some security device.

My State Farm Agent told me my 4300 was covered and not to worry. When I started asking specific questions about coverage he had to confirm with the main office exactly what was covered. As it turns out it's treated the same as a lawn mower. If it burns up in a fire or is stolen I'm covered. Any other problems like a roll-over, hitting something, I'm on my own. Since it cost as much as a new car, and it is a vehicle,I wanted it to be insured more the way a car is and that would have required an additional $575 a year. You might want to talk to your agent a little more about specifics. Mine was not familiar with farm equipment before I pushed him. Now I think he'll be more accurate with the next person who asks about tractors.

Roy - As near as I can tell - one key fits all. When they delivered my 4700 the dealer indicated that one key fits eveything - did not realize that included heavy equipment but guess that is the way it is. I'm going to pull the ignition switch and see if I can replace with an automotive type that will have a different key. My dealer also indicated that when they were coming up to work on the tractror that not to worry about the key as he would just use a screwdriver!

Thanks for your post. My State Farm agent's reply seemed too good to be completely true and apparently it was. Ironic that a company named State FARM wouldn't know about tractors. Roll-over coverage is definately something to consider since that has almost happened twice in six months! Imagine it could cost some serious bucks to fix up roll-over damage? Cheaper alternative might be to burn it up since State Farm would replace the whole tractor then (kidding)! :)

When my dealer had to pick up my 790 to adjust the Mid-PTO, I asked him where I should leave the keys. He said, "No problem, they're all the same"! Never thought he meant all John Deere's /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif.
