There was a previous thread on here about JD wheel lug bolts being loose. I also knew of a JD user whose wheel fell off after a month of use and wrecked the wheel. I was hearing a creaking noise at times and found mine loose on the right rear. The left was fine. Not sure if those bolts can loosen over time but I'm checking mine periodically from now on.

Certainly not a "JD" problem...I will bet every major manufacturer recommends checking wheel bolt/nut torque at the first 50 hour service. Even most automobile manufacturers list it in the service section.

You're right Kenny! In fact if you look at the sked maintenance JD sets wheel lug checking at 10 hours.

Loose lug nuts were a common issue on the older 4000 series of CUTs when first made by JD. If I remember correctly it was an issue with one of the rear wheels. Honestly, how many of you check the lug nuts on a new car after a few miles?

I checked mine at 50 hrs. Found one each on the front slightly loose, over half on the back, so re-torqued. At 75 hrs. all was well.

My friend was driving his 4300 down the road to help a neighbor with the backhoe when his right rear wheel fell off at "speed". He was lucky he was not hurt. It took him and a passerby to right the wheel find a few of the bolts and put it back on.
From that point on he checked the bolts periodically.
It almost happened once afterward during a snowstorm when all but two bolts fell out of the left rear before he noticed it!

I've checked mine now and then and have never found them loose.

I am at almost 40 hours and I have not checked them in a bit, I guess this is a notification to take another check.

Time for me to check too! Thanks.

Yes, very scary -- even more so if wheel ever comes off while driving on the road which happened to me two years ago on a Case 580 backhoe. Right front wheel came off and went rolling down a bank while the BH came to an abrupt stop with hub down on the right road shoulder. Not fun and it could have been a lot worse ending. I certainly learned a lesson -- keep those wheel lugs tight.
