I have checked mine when i was servicing my tractor, but have never found a loose one.

Good heads up.....Just got me a new one....and will check it every few hours during break-in. This is my third new tractor, never any problems with that before but, there is always a first time!

Friend of mine had a 33xx tractor with fel and backhoe he had lots of problems with lugs getting loose and walking out. More than likely if he had been aware of this early on and had kept them tight it would have been less of an issue.

There was a previous thread on here about JD wheel lug bolts being loose. I also knew of a JD user whose wheel fell off after a month of use and wrecked the wheel. I was hearing a creaking noise at times and found mine loose on the right rear. The left was fine. Not sure if those bolts can loosen over time but I'm checking mine periodically from now on.

Thanks for the info. I have been hearing a creak in my 4520 when I put a load on it (as in raise the 3 point, etc). I figured it was the glass or something. I will check the lugs this weekend and report back.

Wow.. Guess what? To quote a nascar announcer: "Lost a left front going into turn 1!"

I switched the front wheels last month to gain 4" width on my 2305. And dangit I forgot to retorque em after a couple hrs use! I had to search almost 2 acres on my hands and knees to find 3 lug bolts to get me back to the garage! Found the rest today with help from the good ol sunshine! Out of 5 bolts, only the last one to fall out had damaged threads.

Anyone know the thread pitch and size for me to get a tap to clean up the hub? also anyone know the JD part # for a new set of bolts?

Thanks! and REMEMBER --- Check those lugs and lube every 10hrs!

I'll tell ya, I just changed to new R4 tires on my tractor. I always use an impact wrech when taking them off and putting them on. Usually I switched my tires in the winter due to the snow work. Well this time when I took them off, my left front lugs just spun off. Not one, but them all. I checked them and they appeared to be ok, so I put them back on.

I will now always check the lugs a couple of times a year or after a few hard hours of seat time.

Because of threads like this one, I check my tractor periodically, but have never found any loose lugs. I wonder what makes some tractors prone to this while others do not seem to have the problem. Maybe just the way the tractor is used?

Would using LocTite be of any value?

It could make them hard to get loose if you need to remove your wheel... I have never put it on lug nuts, only on nuts & bolts that i didn't want to come loose.

Others may have done it.

Not "just" your wheels boys and girls. While digging clay with my 3520Cab and toothbar-bucket, I heard a noise, saw what I thought was smoke, (turned out to be dust whew!) My fan chewed into the fan shroud. WHY? ...because my engine shifted because the engine mount screws had come loose and backed out,..letting the engine move around in its mount.

Yes I often checked wheel studs etc but never ever thought about the engine mounts. I felt they may have been loose or not torqued properly at the factory or during pre-delivery, (if that's part of PD?)

My dealer took one look at the clay in my bucket and told me I was working my tractor far toooo hard!! I have many years equipment experience and certainly work my equipment, BUT, I would never abuse it. Anyway as stated before, I do have a good dealer,..no question,...he managed to get the work covered.

BUT,...I report this to emphasize the need to get down and check every bolt you can get a wrench or socket on,.....every once in a while. You don't necessarily need to take a torque wrench with you every time,....just check to see that anything you can comfortably reach,...seems tight. Then, if you suspect something is a tad loose,...you better get a bar on it!!!

Also:..this week I added 6" wheel spacers to each side of my rears and even though my tilt meter still lays over,...pucker factor has drastically reduced!
The best to you all,
. . . tug

Here's what it looks like when you don't re-torque your wheels on a new machine.......
