i had to buy some new bearings for the steering column on my 1020 this week..from the local JD dealer, since i couldn't get the bearings cross referenced; $40 each, and there are 2 bearings. while i was there i asked the salesman about the prices, for example, a needle valve and seat from JD is @ $15 from JD, the exact same needle valve and seat, plus the carb gasket from the local blue dealer was $5. i wanted to know if the store gets the additional $$$ or JD, and according to him, the stores are allowed to make 28-34% on parts, so the additional $$ goes to JD. i think thats a little high for company profit!!

I posted a thread on this subject a month or so back. The majority of folks who responded were definitely in favor of buying ALL their parts at the JD dealer (or Kubota, or whatever). Some had specific reasons or experiences as to why they feel that way.

Personally, I get everything I possibly can at NAPA, I save a potful of money, and I've been totally pleased with the results. Part of the reason is that money is tight, and part of the reason is that my JD dealer is not in the business of making deals: You pay his price, or you walk. I walk a lot...

Because of his attitude, I've bought ALL my implements at competing dealers. Best I've done is an AGCO dealer that sells to real farmers instead of $60,000 SUV-driving yuppies that are willing to pay $15,000 for a machine to mow their postage-stamp lawns.

I realize that it's hard to blame him, as he seems to be doing a pretty good business.

Sorry for the rant, but it's a subject that really chaps me...

I could not agree more. You would be surprised at how many parts you can get for "farm" tractors at NAPA. I buy alot of second hand parts from Valu-Bilt!!!

Pfoxy,

If I didn't know better, I'd think you were talking about the one and only JD dealer here in my town of 300,000. If I ever do need a 'Deere only' part, you can bet I'll make the 40 minute drive to another town to buy it. There's a small town JD dealer who actually acts like he wants my business.

I'm not a real farmer by a long shot. I drive a six year old Tahoe I bought a year and a half ago for $15,000 and compared to real farmers my eleven acres is a postage stamp but I only paid about $10,000 for a machine to mow it... and pull stumps off it... and move logs across it... and take down old fence off it... and prep building sites... and... well, you get the idea./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Hi, Gary. I'm not a real farmer either, but I play one when I get home from work.../w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I've got 4 acres of pasture and 20 acres of woodlot, and my 88 JD750 is plenty of tractor for what I do. I don't think my '89 1 ton 4WD qualifies as an SUV tho.

I think what set me off was that I had to go to the dealer to pick up some parts for a 316 (I do a little wrenching on the side) and saw a new 485 sitting there. All the bells and whistles, too big to be a lawnmower, too small to be a tractor, didn't look as tho it'd pull a sick kitten off a saucer of cold milk, and a $10,000 price tag. And I guarantee, some bozo will have it in his garage.
