I just bought a used mx7 rotary cutter. I needed a few parts, ans I am blown away by the cost from John Deere online. Is there any alternative to the dealer?

What parts are needed?

Are you good at welding and/or machining?

most parts are interchangable at a local farm and ranch store.

I think those are Woods mowers. If you can post a picture someone will probably reconize it. Deere does not build most of their implements, they just paint them. You can buy the parts from the OEM cheaper, there was just a thread about this a week ago.

The good thing about JD equipment is you can always get parts for them. The bad thing about JD equipment is that you usually pay for that convenience. I ordered a set of JD Gator Blades for my 7-Iron deck from an Ebay seller this morning. $49, no tax, free shipping, and the seller wasn't losing money on the item. Local dealer quoted me $95 and 6% tax, plus it would cost me $8 for gas to go pick them up. There are PLENTY of other places to get parts for, as much as I believe in supporting local businesses sometimes it isn't fiscally responsible.

Actually, in reference to Frontier Equipment, we don't even paint them!
We send them the specs we want, they manufacture to those specs, paint them in our color, add the Frontier decals and ship them to the dealers. Deere has very little to do on the front end... Now the back end, servicing the customer after the sale is where the difference is. All of these companies must provide Deere with replacement parts well past the industry norm. Yes they may be more expensive, but some believe it is worth it in the long run. From a dealer's perspective I love not having to deal with several different short line manufacturers. If the Frontier stuff was crap it would be a different story, but we have had nothing but good luck with them.

"OEM cheaper"... not necessarily the case, always.

I have a Kuhn disc mower. They make a number of the models that Deere rebadges and sells.

My local dealer doesn't sell Kuhn. There's a Kuhn dealer 210 miles from my place. Lookin' at tractors and such and ask the Kuhn dealer for a pair of cutter bar shoes for my mower.

$300!!

Went to JDParts online. Same parts for the JD "alter-ego" mower - $170.

Local JD dealer orders them and charges me $170...

I'm happy!

What kind of luck have you had with the Frontier branded, Italian made/Sicma/Machieo roto tillers? Ken Sweet

Ut Ooo... that's a leading question, counselor!

I've got a Maschio (sp?) made - Frontier 1270 tiller. Only used it an hour or so; can't testify about reliability. Very heavy-duty, though. Gear drive, weighs nearly a 1,000lbs and it's only a bit over 6 feet!

What's the word from the "field"?
